The State of Life unto Righteousness, for the Kind of it, is fuch as a Man'is in, who, being not only quickened, but rifen and come forth of the Grave, is in an immediate Disposition for the common Actions of Life: Rom. vi. 4. 'Therefore we are buried with him by baptifm into death: that ' like as Chrift was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even fo we also should walk in newness of life.' Col. iii. 1. "If ye then be 'rifen with Christ, seek thofe things which are above, where Chrift fitteth on the right hand of 'God.' Compared with Matth. xxviii. 6. Jefus is not here: for he is rifen, as he said.' John xi. 44. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-cloaths and bis face was bound about with a napkin. Jefus faith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.' And we are, by the Renewing in Sanctification, put into fuch a State of Life unto Righteousness, inafmuch as thereby we are endowed with infufed Habits of Grace, the immediate Principles of gracious Actions: Deut. xxx. 6. And the Lord thy God will 'circumcife thine heart, and the heart of thy feed, to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, ' and with all thy foul, that thou mayft live.' Heb: viii. 10. For this is the covenant that I will make ' with the house of Ifrael after thofe days, faith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts.' 2 Pet. i. 4. • Whereby

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and "-precious promises; that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped

the corruption that is in the world through luft.' We are in that State of Life unto Righteousness, in refpect of our renewed Part: Gal. ii. 20. I am crucified with Chrift: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Chrift liveth in me : and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himfelf for me. Compared with Rom. vii. 17. Now then, it is no more I that do it, but fin that dwelleth in me.'

Actual Sanctification is the Work of the Spirit, whereby we are enabled more and more to die unto Sin, and live unto Righteousness. Actual Holiness, proceeding from that State of Death and Life, confifts, in more and more dying unto Sin, and living unto Righteousness: Gal v. 24. And they that are 'Chrift's, have crucified the flesh, with the af'fections and lufts.' Rom. vi. 4. Therefore we ' are buried with him by baptifm into death: that like as Chrift was raised up from the dead by the 'glory of the Father, even fo we also should walk in newness of life.' verf. 6. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Chrift, that the 'body of fin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not ferve fin.' Compared with Prov. iv. 18. The path of the juft is as the fhining light, that fhineth more and more unto the per'fect day.'

Dying unto Sin more and more, lies in our mor tifying of Sin, until it die out: Rom. viii. "If 13. ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of of the body, ye fhall live.' Col. iii. 5. Mortify

therefore your members which are upon. the earth; fornication, &c. The Sins which true Mortification is aimed against, are, the whole Body of the Sins of the Flesh, Col. ii. 11. Gal v. 24. forecited. We mortify them, by refufing Compliance with them, and acting the contrary Graces: Gal. v. 16. 17. This I fay then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye 'fhall not fulfil the luft of the flesh. For the flesh 'lufteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh and these are contrary the one to the ( other; fo that ye cannot do the things that ye 'would.' Tit. ii. 11. 12. The grace of God that 'bringeth falvation, hath appeared to all men; teaching us, that, denying ungodliness, and worldly lufts, we fhould live foberly, righteously, and godly in this prefent world." They are mortified that Way, because in that Way they are starved, and Grace is ftrengthened: Rom. xiii. 14. Put ye on the Lord Jefus Chrift, and make not pro'vifion for the flesh, to fulfil the lufts thereof." Heb. v. 14. Strong meat belongeth to them that

are of full age, even those who by reason of ufe ' have their fenfes exercised to difcern both good and evil.'

Living unto Righteousness more and more, lies in our practising of Acts of holy Obedience, or good Works, until we arrive at Perfection therein: 1 Pet. iv. 1. 2. "He that hath suffered in the 'flesh, hath ceafed from fin; that he no longer 'fhould live the reft of his time in the flesh, to 'the lufts of men, but to the will of God.' Prov. iv. 18. forecited. Phil. iii. 12. Not as though I had already attained, either were already per'fect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which alfo I am apprehended of

Chrift Jefus.' verf. 14. I prefs toward the mark, for the prize of the high calling of God in Chrift Jefus. And that Practice of Obedience extends to the whole known Will of God: Acts xiii. 22. And God faid, I have found David

the fon of Jeffe, a man after mine own heart, < which shall fulfil all my will. Col. iv. 12. Epaphras, who is one of you, a fervant of Chrift, faluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may ftand perfect, and compleat in all the will of God.' Chap. i, 10. That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all < pleafing, being fruitful in every good work, and increafing in the knowledge of God.'

A good Work, or Act of holy Obedience, is, any Thought, Word, or Deed, agreeable to the Will of God, and pleafing in his Sight: Phil. iv. 8. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honeft, what foever things are juft, whatfoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatfoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praife, think on these things.' Heb. xiii. 21. Now the God of peace make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleafing in his fight, through Jefus Chrift. And fuch Works are, those which are commanded in God's Word, done in Faith, and directed to his Glory: Matth. xv. 9. In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.' Rom. xiv. 23; Whatsoever is not of faith, is fin.' Compared with Heb. xi. 6. Without faith it is impoffible to pleafe God: for he that cometh to God, muft believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of

them that diligently feek him.' I Cor. x. 31. 'Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatso

ever ye do, do all to the glory of God.' Where fore, no Works whatsoever of an unfanctified Man, are truly good, or pleafing in the Sight of God: John xv. 5. I am the vine, ye are the branches: 'He that abideth in me, and I in him, the fame 'bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.' Tit. i. 15. Unto them that are defiled and unbelieving, is nothing pure 'but even their mind and confcience is defiled." Rom. viii. 7. The carnal mind is enmity against 'God: for it is not fubject to the law of God, 'neither indeed can be.' And that, because though the Matter of them may be good, yet they are not done in a right Manner, nor to a right End: I Cor. xiii. 3. Though I beftow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me < nothing. Matth. vi. 2. Therefore, when thou 'doft thine alms, do not found a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do, in the fynagogues,

and in the streets, that they may have glory of 'men.' Zech. vii. 5. 6. When ye fafted, and mourned in the fifth and feventh month, even thofe feventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? And when ye did eat, and when ye 'did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and 'drink for yourselves? The good Works of fanctified Perfons are none of them perfectly good, or free from finful Mixture: I. Ixiv. 6. All our 'righteoufneffes are as filthy rags.' Gal. v. 17.
