In this new edition the first volume contains the Greek text and the Scholia according to that of Morell, as alfo the Latin verfion confiderably improved. To thefe fucceed Leontius de Sphæra, the Scholia according to the Mofcow MS. together with the Animadverfiones critica, confifting partly of the editor's own conjectural alterations, and partly of fuch hints as have been communicated by others. Mr. B. in the emendations propofed by himfelf generally follows the Moscow and Breflaw MSS. in which we think he is right. He has availed him of the Apparatus for an edition of this author left by the late Subrector Müller, of Altona, comprifing a collection of various readings from the Barberini MSS. and from the Codex auguftanus eclogarum Stobi, as alfo of a comparifon of the different Latin tranflations, and of the editions of Aldus, Stephanus, Morel, Fell, and Grotius; laftly, of parallel paffages from other poets. Among thefe, we find no obfervations made by the late Müller himself.

The fecond volume prefents the Latin interpreters of Aratus mentioned in the title, namely, Cicero, Germanicus with the Scholiaft, and Avienas, together with notes upon them, of which but few are original. Of his own conduct, in regard to the admiffion of different readings into the text, Mr. B. gives the following account, in the Preface to the firit volume, p. xxviii. Superfunt quidem in textu Arati, qualem dedi, plura menda quæ cum aliis fublatis quoque fublata vellem, cum eorum emendationes in notis propofitæ fent certiffimaæ; verum non aufus jum ea tullere, quando exemplum editionis Marelianæ, quod à me emendarum typis exfcribendum operis dedi, Lipfiam mitterem: ne tamen ea lectores motentur, in notis femper ipfa verba indicavi, quae in textu legenda et pro vulgatis reponenda funt. To this volume are fubjoined, an excellent Epitola critica, by Groddeck, in which three MSS. in the Library at Vienna are defcribed, with various readings selected from them; a life of Aratus, from Petavi Uranologium; another by Iriarte; Tevos Apatow, which had been before published by Ruhnken; the fame according to Suidas; together with a Commentatia de Arati vita, ingenio, fcriptis, &c. by the editor, &c. The various lections are marked with the letters a, B, y, according to the degrees of their probability; and where a reading different from that of the Elzevir edition is adopted into the text, the heretofore common reading is pointed out by the letter K, (κοινη.) To this first volume is prefixed a Madonna, with the infant Jefus, engraved by A. W. Böhun, after Carlo Dolci, as the most appropriate ornament. Ibid.

The additions made in this new edition are specified in the title; we should, however, have wifhed that Mr. de M. had defcribed more particularly than he has done the eleven MSS. which he has bimself collated for this first volume, containing the Gofpels only. With refpect to the text, though the editor lofes no opportunity of inveighing, in the most illiberal terms, againft Griefbach, against his threefold Recenfion of the New Teftament, and against the critical use of readings excerpted from the writings of the Fathers; he very rarely admits a various reading into it which had not before been adopted by him. We can affure A. B. that the learned men whom he mentions have never condefcended to review Novels for us, and we fear would not if we were to afk it. But they who do us that good office really read them; and our intention is to give as fair an account as poffible. As to the Mortimers and the Mandevilles, not being acquainted with the families, we may perhaps have miftaken the one for the other.

Julia complains that we omit many works of the novel clafs. This we confess is true; but if the will take the cha

racter of any fuch work which we do review, it is a thousand to one that it will fuit any other which we do not. So far, at least, as the manufacture for the watering-places is concerned.

LITERARY INTELLIGENCE.

The fourth volume of Mr. King's Munimenta Antiqua is gone to prefs.

Mr. Maurice is preparing to publifh his Tragedy of The Great Mogul, founded upon the catastrophe which took place on Nadir Shah's Invafion of India, in 1739. It is compofed partly on the Greek model, with chorufes of Brahmin priests.

Dr. Biffet is engaged in writing a Hiftory of the Slave Trade, from the firft difcoveries of the Portuguefe, to the pre

fent time.

We hear alfo of a Tranflation of the Pofthumous Works of Marmontel, and of a Life of that celebrated writer, by himfelf.

A new edition of Melmoth's Letters, publifhed under the affumed name of Sir Thomas Fitzofborne, is at prefent in the prefs. The author, it has long been well known, was the celebrated tranflator of Cicero's and of Pliny's Letters,

N. B. In reviewing M. Juigne's Treatife on the French Tongue, we fpoke of his promife, in the Preface, of an Accurate Genealogical Table of the Parts of Speech, as not diftinctly performed. See Rev. for October, p. 457. We now perceive, that fuch a Table, neatly engraved on copper, was at that time miflaid; together with a general Table of French Verbs, regular and irregular; both very good and useful. We therefore voluntarily do him the juflice to mention them.

ERRATUM.

The table, in p. 531 of our laft Number, fhould have followed the words" by paper or fpecie", in the last line but one of p. 530. After which, inftead of " and where the thoufandths", fhould be read " and if 382 thousandths of our payments". The error arose from an accidental obfcurity in the MS.

NOTICE.

THE Editors of the British Critic, confidering British Literature as their chief object, have yet at all times been defirous alfo to give information refpecting the works produced on the Continent of Europe; fo far, at least, as might not too much interfere with what they efteemed their principal duties.

Preferving the fame ideas, it has appeared to them, on mature confideration, that fome improvement might be struck. out, with respect to both thefe departments: and that it would be particularly defireable if, by any new arrangement, they could gain at once more fpace for their account of British Works, and yet give information more immediately fuited to general ufe, refpecting thofe of foreign countries. This they purpose to effect, after the clofe of the prefent year, by difcontinuing the divifion of the Review, entitled FOREIGN CATALOGUE; which will enable them proportionably to extend their larger accounts of English books. The BRITISH CATALOGUE will not perhaps undergo any material change.

For the information of the Public refpecting Foreign Books, they mean to give a regular lift of fuch as are actually imported every month, with occafional references to the Foreign Reviews in which they have been noticed; and, when it shall appear neceffary, a lift of books which ought to be imported. Sometimes, when a foreign work may feem particularly curious, a detailed account of it will be inferted.

They hope alfo, by means of a plan devised with fome care, to give a more complete monthly lift, than has ever yet been. produced, of all the publications which proceed from the prefs in any part of the United Kingdom. This improved plan will commence with the Review for January, 1805.
