Sida 30 - ... Melanesians or non-Polynesians. However, in my opinion the assumption of a single source in East Polynesia for the effective settlement of New Zealand now needs closer examination and possible modification in the next few years, because some archaeological and linguistic evidence suggests it may be in error. For instance, one cannot help but be impressed with the fact that there are two main groupings of tribes in New Zealand, those with several different Toi and those with Kupe, as origin ancestors,...

Sida 31 - Ac., &c. In all this mythical rhapsody there is scarcely a grain of truth ; and yet some educated Europeans have wholly believed it. The New Zealanders themselves, however, never did so. Sida 31 - Rarotonga in two days sailing would continue on the same course for two weeks, and so discover New Zealand. However, New Zealand was discovered, and, by the traditions, more than once, although there is no evidence that such voyages could have been intentional feats of long-distance navigation. Intentional voyages of this range require knowledge both of navigation and geography far beyond that found in Polynesia in Cook's time or since, and I firmly conclude that the voyages to New Zealand were accidental.
Sida 177 - When two of the opposite valuables meet in the Kula and are exchanged, it is said that these two have married. The armshells are conceived as a female principle, and the necklaces as the male. An interesting comment on these ideas was given to me by one of the informants. As mentioned above, a gift of food is never given from Sinaketa to Kiriwina, obviously because it would be a case of bringing...
