JAMES PARKER AND CO.

[graphic][ocr errors][subsumed][subsumed]

HAVING been requested by MR. PARKER to examine his new edition of the "Daily Services" of the United Church of England and Ireland, and to express my opinion of it, I, having done so, most warmly commend it to all Churchmen, and especially to the Clergy, who will find in it a great help towards maintaining that godly and wholesome use of these Daily Services which the Prayer-book enjoins on "all Priests and Deacons who are not let by sickness or some other urgent cause. The present edition, besides the increase of margin and rubrication, embodies the following improvements upon the last:

1. Whenever a reference is made, either from the Epistles and Gospels or Lessons, to a portion of a chapter, the number of the verse has been inserted in a plain figure at the side where the portion should commence or end.

2. As a foot-note at the bottom of the page, a memorandum is placed shewing in what part of the service the passage is used. It thus at once verifies the reference.

3. This plan is also carried out in the Psalms; and when Proper Psalms are appointed, a reference is given, after the first one, to the nextthus avoiding the turning back to the beginning of the book.

We see also by this means what portion of the Bible or Psalms is used in other parts of the service of the Church.

The references in many cases have been facilitated by the adoption of the number of the page.

The fixed Festival, as it occurs in the part of the book containing the Daily Lessons, is now marked, and a note at the foot of the page refers to where the Proper Lessons will be found.
