CONSTITUTIONS

OF THE

CONGREGATION OF THE HOLY-CROSS.

CONSTITUTION I.

Ends of the Congregation of the Holy-Cross.

1. The Congregation of the Holy-Cross is composed of two societies, distinct but not separated, that is to say of priests or clergymen and lay brothers, who are divided into teaching and coadjutor brothers for the work of the different houses.

2. All are constituted according to the religious state by the simple vows of poverty, obedience and chastity under the name of Salvatorists and Josephites of the Holy-Cross.

3. The ends of the Congregation are as follows: 1. the perfection of individuals by

the practice of the evangelical counsels; 2. the sanctification of one's fellow-creatures by the preaching of the word of God,especially in the country and foreign missions etc.; 3. the Christian instruction and education of youth through the medium of schools in which letters and sciences are taught, and of schools of agriculture and of trades: these latter being especially destined to poor and abandoned children.

CONSTITUTION II.

Dependence on the Holy See.

4. The Congregation of the Holy-Cross will always be under the entire dependence of the holy See and the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda.

5. The Superior General, elected by the General Chapter, will be confirmed by the holy See, and, once confirmed, will not be liable to be deposed by the General Chapter. The holy See alone will have the right to pronounce his dismissal.

6. Conformably to the Decree of Pius VII of the 22a August 1814, the Institute of the Holy-Cross will always have a house at Rome for the residence of its Procurator General near the holy See.

7. No new establishment can be founded without the permission of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda.

8. Every three years, after the closing of the General Chapter, the Superior General will lay before the sovereign Pontiff a report on the material and disciplinary state of the whole Institute.

9. The immoveable estates becoming the property of the Institute can only be alienated according to the canonical rules: nevertheless, it is permitted to the Superiors of the different houses to alienate to concurrence of the sum of one thousand francs. But if the interest of the Congregation require a more considerable alienation, the General will obtain the permission of the Bishop of the Diocese who, as apostolical delegate, may allow an alienation of five thousand francs :

any greater alienation can only be authorized but by the Holy See.

10. In the case of the suppression of the Institute, or the canonical separation of the two societies, all the moveable and immoveable estates will remain at the disposal of the Holy See, which in the last mentioned case,will judge, after cognizance of their origin, in what proportion the said estates. ought to be divided.

11. The Congregation of the Holy-Cross professes, most particularly, to respect and obey the apostolical Constitutions and Decrees, the orders and counsels of the S. Congregation of the Propaganda, which has taken. it under its protection.

CONSTITUTION III.

Dependence of the Congregation towards the Bishops of the Dioceses.

12. All the houses, all the establishments, of whatever nature they be, will depend on their respective Bishop, except in what re
