PREFACE.

ABOUT five years ago a new Bengali Version of the Psalms was printed, having a new English Version interpaged with it. The English was intended to facilitate and economise the the criticism, which it was hoped would be bestowed on the Bengali. It aimed, accordingly, at little more than giving a clear and exact representation of what was conceived to be the sense of the Hebrew,-that sense which the Bengali version was meant to exhibit. Throughout this translation, wherever the sense of the original was doubtful, great deference was shown to the Authorized English Version,and, generally, as little change as possible was introduced.

The present translation, based on the earlier one, differs from it widely in character. The translator has used much greater freedom in following his own convictions as to the sense of the original; never, however, deviating from the E. V. except after mature investigation.
