47. L. M WATTS'S P.

God manifefled, in his Works and Word.

TH

HE heav'ns declare thy glory, Lord, In ev'ry ftar thy wisdom fhines : But when our eyes behold thy Word, We read thy Name in fairer lines....

The rolling fun, the changing light,
And night and day thy pow r confefs;
But the bleft volume thou haft writ
Reveals thy juftice and thy grace.

Sun, moon, and ftars, convey thy praife
Round the whole earth, and never stand:
So when thy truth began its race,
It touch'd and glanc'd on ev'ry land.

Nor fhall thy fpreading gofpel reft,
Till thro' the world thy truth has run :
Till Chrift has all the nations bleft,
That fee the light, or feel the fun.

Great Sun of Righteoufnefs arife!
Blefs the dark world with heav'nly light:
Thy gofpel makes the fimple wife;
Thy laws are pure, thy judgments right.

Thy nobleft wonders here we view,
In fouls renew'd, and fins forgiv'n ;
Lord, cleanse our fins, our fouls renew,
And make thy word our guide to heav'n.

L

The Riches of God's Word.

ET Avarice from fhore to fhore
Her fav'rite God pursue;

Thy Word, O Lord, we value more
Than India or Peru.

Here mines of knowledge, love and joy
Are open to our fight:
The pureft gold without alloy,
And gems divinely bright.

The counfels of redeeming grace
Thefe facred leaves unfold:
And here the Saviour's lovely face
Our raptur'd eyes behold.

Here light defcending from above
Directs our doubtful feet:
Here promises of heav'nly love
Our ardent wishes meet.

Our num'rous griefs are here redrest,
And all our wants supplied :
Naught we can afk to make us bleft,
Is in this book denied.

For these ineftimable gains,
That fo enrich the mind.

O may we fearch with eager pains,
Affur'd that we fhall find.

49. C. M. WATTS, altered.

The Faithfulness of God in his Word.

[ocr errors]

May my fong for ever shew
The mercies of the Lord;

And may fucceeding ages know,
How faithful is his word.

The facred truths his lips pronounce
Shall firm as heav'n endure;
And, if he speaks a promise once,
Th' eternal grace is fure.

How long the race of David held
The Ifraelitish throne!
But there's a nobler cov'nant feal'd
To David's greater Son.

His feed for ever shall poffefs

A throne above. the skies;
The meaneft fubject of his grace
Shall to that glory rise.

His promife he will ne'er revoke,
But keep his grace in mind;
And what Eternal Love hath spoke,
Eternal Truth fhall bind.

Great God of hofts, thy wond'rous ways
Are fung by faints above:

And faints on earth their honors raife To thy unchanging love.

LAW and GOSPEL.

50. L. M.

WATTS, altered.

HE law declares, and makes us know
What debt immenfe to God we owe;

TH

But in the gospel we may fee,

How God hath fet the debtor free.

The law discovers guilt and fin;

And fhews how vile our hearts have been;
Only the gospel can exprefs

God's mercy, love and righteousness.

What curfes does the law denounce
Against the man who fins but once :
But in the gospel Chrift appears,
Pard'ning the guilt of num'rous years.

The vileft finner out of hell,
That can his cafe to Jefus tell,
Shall find relief thro' his dear blood,
And pardon from a gracious God.-

My foul, no more attempt to draw
Thy life or comfort from the law:
All joy and peace the gospel gives :
Happy the finner who believes.

Another.

O, you that reft upon

the Law,

And madly feek falvation there :
Look to the flames that Mofes faw!
And fhrink, and tremble, and despair.

But I'll retire beneath the Cross;
Saviour, at thy dear feet I lie:
And the keen fword that juftice draws,
Flaming and red, fhall pafs me by..

WATTS'S H.

Sinai and Sion.

TOT to the terrors of the Lord,

Ν The tempeft, fire and smoke;

Not to the thunder of that word
Which God on Sinai fpoke;

But we are come to Sion's hill,
The city of our God,

Where milder words declare his will,
And spread his love abroad.

[ocr errors]

Behold th' innumerable hoft

Of angels cloth'd in light!
Behold the fpirits of the juft,
Whose faith is turn'd to fight!
Behold the blefs'd affembly there,
Whose names are writ in heav'n!
And God, the judge of all declares
Their vileft fins forgiv'n.

The faints on earth, and all the dead
But one communion make,
All join in Chrift their living head,
And of his grace partake.

In fuch fociety as this:

My weary foul would reft :

The man that dwells where Jefus is,
Muft be for ever bleft.
