Odds and Ends.

[The following paragraphs selected from old publications are considered worth repeating.]

ON July 31st, 1798, a footrace for 100 guineas was run near Smithers' Barn, about half a mile from Brighton, between Flint, of Chalwood, Surrey, and Paine, of Appledore, Kent. The former was described as a stout, muscular man; the latter as being thin and morbid in his appearance. The bets ran high in favour of Flint. Five guineas were given for a bet of 100; and immediately before the race 50 to 40 and 6 to 4 was the currency of the field. The course was 110 yards, and was railed in for the purpose. In the race it appeared that the idea of preferring velocity to weight was perfectly justifiable, Flint being early distanced by his lighter opponent, who shot beyond him with, so it is said, the swiftness of an arrow. is computed that exclusive of the bets which were laid on the spot, no less than 12,000 guineas were transferred by this contest, as the gentlemen were equally interested.

THE OAKLEY HUNT.-£400 has been raised by the Oakley Hunt and spent in placing in Irchester Church a fine coloured window to the memory of Robert Arkwright, who for a very long period was master, and of T. A. Macan deputy-master. Under the window is the following inscription:" To the Memory of Robert Wigram Arkwright, who died December 1st, 1888; and Turner Arthur Macan, who died June 5th, 1889. Pleasant in their lives, in death not divided.”

ON Monday, March 31st, 1789, an extraordinary run was had with a pack of beagles belonging to Mr. Sutton, of Devizes. After killing a brace of hares they unkenneled a fox in Potterne Woods; and, in a chase of six hours and a half, pursued him for more than fifty miles over Salisbury Plain to Fisherton, where he was taken alive. Upon examining the fox he was found to be toothless, and to stand higher than any hound in the pack. Only the huntsman and whipper-in were up when he was taken.
