Vols. 1-3 are out, Vol. 4 is nearly ready; very few copies remain for sale.

"I have to express the strongest feeling of gratitude to Mr. Bullen for this excellent series of old plays-the most valuable that have been issued for a quarter of a century. The play of 'Bernavelt' alone is worth a small library of ordinary reprints; it is one of Fletcher and Massinger's masterpieces. Nor is it a small thing to have recovered plays by Glapthorne and Shirley, though neither of these has the intrinsic worth of the Barnavelt play."-F. G. Fleay, "The Athenæum," March 3, 1883.

[CAMOENS] os LUSIADAS (THE LUSIADS): Englished by RICHARD FRANCIS BURTON (edited by his wife, Isabel Burton), 2 vols. 12mo. pp. xxi and 471, cloth, gilt edges, uncut, 12s Bernard Quaritch, 1880 Vols. 3-4. Life and Commentary, 2 vols. 12mo. cloth,

1881

Vols. 5-6. The Rhythmas, or Lyricks of Luis de Camoens; Sonnets, Canzons, Odes and Sextines, literally Englished by RICHARD F. BURTON, and imprinted for the Translator at London in October, 1884, 2 vols. 12mo. cloth, 16s Vols. I-II comprise the LUSIADS, in the best English version extant; Vols. III and IV the COMMENTARY, which contains the History of the first settlement of the Portuguese in India, and Captain Burton's Travels in the footsteps of Camoens.

1884

Like Shakespeare, Homer, Milton, Virgil, Dante, and Cervantes, Camoens has his votaries throughout the world. One of the master-minds which have stamped literature with the seal of imperishable genius, his cultus is not confined to the land that gave him birth nor to the geographical limits of the Portuguese Language. In many countries translators have endeavoured to reproduce the

poetry of the Lusiads; and in our tongue there exist numerous versions more or less faithful and ambitious. In 1655, Sir Richard Fanshaw began the series, continued in Mickle, Musgrave, Adamson, Quillinan, Hewitt, Duff, and Aubertin ; and now worthily closed by one superior to them all. Captain Burton's work is of peculiar value for several reasons. He was attracted to Camoens by a powerful sympathy, arising from a certain similarity in the lives of the two men and in their modes of thought; and for twenty years of travel and exploration he made the Lusiads his constant companion, drinking in, as it were, the life and spirit of his master, with whom he completely identified himself. His great mastery of the English language has enabled him to overcome the difficulties of exact and verbal reproduction, without loosing the sweetness and perfume of the poetry. In fact, only an enthusiastic worshipper, endowed with extraordinary gifts, could have sustained the toil of such a feat, borne unflaggingly and successfully to the end. A few archaisms appear in the translation which, so far from seeming out of place, rather heighten the force and effect of the English poem. It is a work which amply justifies Mrs. Burton's energetic admiration, and must add a new and glorious wreath to the many honours that already crown the reputation of Captain Burton.

"Captain Burton's book will help many to a deeper and more appreciative insight into the great masterpiece of Portuguese literature."-Manchester Examiner and Times, January 17, 1881.

Captain Burton-one of the most remarkable men of this present time— has followed up his excellent and romantic version of the Lusiads' of Luis de Camoens, with a commentary, which-to me at least is a good deal more interesting than the Lusiads' themselves. That, perhaps, is saying little; for I have always found the 'Lusiads' little better than dull reading, and have never been able to quite understand the enthusiasm with which they are written of by learned men. That, however, is by the way. As regards the poet and the man I am in no such difficulty. Camoens was a hero, and his life, as Captain Burton justly says-and Captain Burton is the best judge living of such matters-is an epic life' in every sense of the words. The heroic and the epic qualities are finely brought out in the present commentary. It is a treasury of learning and intelligence, and at the same time, it is in places as beautiful and moving a romance as I have read for many a day. Captain Burton divides his work into five chapters; namely, Biographical,' Bibliographical,' 'Historical and Chronological, Geographical,' and Annotative.' And, so far as I can see, he seems to have completely exhausted his subject. It has rarely been my good fortune to read a more interesting and attractive book. should send many readers to the 'Lusiads' themselves-in the original Portuguese, or in the picturesque English of Captain Burton himself; and it should secure the author many friends and well-wishers for his promised translation of the sonnets and the songs.

"I should add that Mrs. Burton contributes to these volumes a spirited little essay on the reviews called forth by her husband's version of the epic. She is very justly severe on the indifference with which we moderns regard such 'bygone and old-world things' as 'Romance, Loyalty, Honour, and Patriotsm.' Of the last three of these qualities there is an abundance in the 'Lusiads.' But is there so very much of the first? I cannot think so. To me the poet is a hundredfold more romantic than the poem, the man than the book, the life than the work. Camoens, the adventurer, is worthy of a place with Cervantes; but the 'Lusiads' is not 'Don Quixote,' and Romance-well, before I go any further I should like to have Mrs. Burton's idea of Romance. That will keep us going, I think, for some time."-Truth, December 1, 1881.

Important Archæological Work on Spain.

Carderera y Solano, Iconografia Espanola,

coleccion de Retratos, Estatuas, Mausoléos, y demas Monumentos inéditos, de Reyes, Reinas, grandes Capitanes, escritores, y otros personages celebres de la nacion, desde el siglo XI hasta el XVII, copiados de los originales; con texto biografico y descriptivo en Espanol y Frances, 2 vols. royal folio, 92 fine plates of Portraits, Sculptures, Bas-Reliefs, taken from original Paintings and Sculptural Monuments, nine of which are beautifully illuminated in gold and colours, half morocco, gilt tops, uncut, £10.

Madrid, 1855-64

the same, Grand Papier Vélin, hf. morocco, gilt tops, uncut, £20. 1855-64 One of the most magnificent books on the Art-Monuments of Spain, and probably superior to any other in the accuracy and learning of its author. The series of illustrations was selected from works of art which were excellent by reason of their historical character or the beauty of their execution. Only 275 copies were printed, of which about 150 were absorbed by subscribers amongst the aristocracy of Spain. The book may therefore be regarded as virtually unpublished, and as likely before long, in consequence of its intrinsic worth and the short supply of copies, to become a costly rarity.

"His great work, the 'Iconografía Española,' published in 1853 and 1864, contains seventyfour portraits, statues, and mausoleums,' dating 'from the eleventh to the seventeenth centuries.' Not only the original drawings, but the text in Spanish and French, were his own work. Amongst the gems of this collection may be named the bas-reliefs of Charles V and his Empress, attributed by Cean Bermudez to Pompeo Leoni, and now in the Museum at Madrid; portraits of Philip II when young, and in his old age; the unhappy Don Carlos, Don Juan de Austria, Philip's wives, and the famous 'one-eyed' Princess of Eboli. That of Hernan Cortés is exquisitely finished. He executed several copies of portraits after Goya, which have never been published, notably that of the famous Andalusian beauty La Duquesa de Alva.' The mantilla, maja jacket, short black lace dress, silk stockings, and high-heeled shoes indicate the provincial costume of the duchess of the period' to perfection. That of Maria Luisa, the less beautiful and austere wife of Charles III, indicates Goya's character. He seems never to have flattered his sitters, even when nature had been gracious to them. Maria Luisa de Borbon, Duchess of San Fernando, figures in an empire dress, with a head-gear of feathers; and albeit nature had forgotten to favour her, the wayward artist painted her as she lived, plain and dowdy."-Athenæum, April 10th, 1880.

1829-51 "In the death of the elder Mr. Doyle-father to the graceful and facile artist whose Pips his Diary,' and 'Brown, Jones, and Robinson,' have won him such well-deserved fame-British humorous art has sustained a very great loss. Mr. Doyle was the celebrated H. B., a political caricaturist whose works, from 1829 to 1850, aroused a degree of interest in England which more than once approached the proportions of a furore."-Daily Telegraph.

An interesting and important COLLECTION of 135 POLITICAL and DOMESTIC CARICATURES, including examples of Isaac Cruikshank, Woodward, Rowlandson, Gillray, Sayer, and others, some very early and rare specimens, &c. mostly COLOURED, the whole mounted in an old folio scrap-book, bound in russia, £25. 1784, etc. Including a Comic Dance of Death, coloured-Twenty mezzotint plates, with verses underneath, of London Cries, Sailors and Soldiers Ashore, etc. published by Lawrie and Whittle, 1794 -Illustrations of Tristram Shandy, by Bunbury-Caricatures of Fox, Burke, Bonaparte, and others-The Monkey Merchant, by Rowlandson, coloured, etc.

SAYER (James) Political Sketches, Portraits, and Caricature Prints, including several UNPUBLISHED PLATES, 144 in all, mounted in a portfolio, VERY RARE, £50.

1782-1808

A collection of exceptional interest and value; it was presented by the Artist to his friend, William Berners, Esq. as is attested by an Autograph letter in the volume, dated 7th February, 1818, which says, "I have been able to arrange a few sets of my Etchings in Portfolios. I have long meditated to offer one to your acceptance. I have added some

marginal notes to explain most of the Characters and Subjects, which, like their Recorder, are now very much out of date."

Sayer, the contemporary of Gillray is only slightly inferior to him in satiric power. So similar are the works of these two artists, that Gillray adopted Sayer's marks, on his earlier works, to deceive the public as to their authorship.
