Vedder's Illustrated Edition of the RUBAIYAT

OF OMAR KHAYYAM, translated by EDWARD FITZGERALD, with fifty illustrations, by ELIHU VEDDER, and an ornamental title-page and cver designed by Mr. Vedder, 1 vol. 4to. £5. 5s This is unquestionably the most original and striking illustrated book ever produced in America. For many years the wonderful verses of the Persian poet have haunted Mr. Vedder, and pictured themselves in his imagination; and now he has caught and reproduced the pictures in this volume. There are fifty full-page illustrations, largely figure-pieces, drawn with a force and grace altogether unusual. There is not a commonplace or petty picture in the book, but all have an originality of conception and a masterly sweep of execution which are in the highest degree impressive.

The binding of the book is admirably in harmony with the artist's designs, and the whole forms a gift-book of unsurpassed attractiveness.

Watson (H. C.) Topographical Botany: being

local and personal Records towards showing the Distribution of British Plants traced through the 112 Counties and Vice-Counties of England, Wales and Scotland, second edition, corrected and enlarged with a Memoir of the Author, by J. G. BAKER, Esq., F.R.S., etc., and an entirely new coloured map showing the distribution of British Plants, thick 8vo. xlvii and 612 pp. cloth, 168 1883

The first edition, privately printed at Thames Ditton in 1873, having become very rare, this one has been edited from the Author's interleaved copy, which he kept constantly at hand, and entered all records of the occurrence of plants in additional vice-counties that came to his notice. "Those interested in British botany will feel thankful to the publisher for undertaking its publication.

"It would be difficult to find a work which has been looked forward to with more anxiety than this new edition of Topographical Botany;' difficult, too, to find a book which more thoroughly fulfils the anticipations formed of it. That these anticipations were high it is unnecessary to assert. In the whole range of British botanists it would have been impossible to find two so well fitted for the task of editing the work as those whose names are attached to the short preface with which it opens. United to Mr. Watson by strong ties of personal friendship, Mr. Baker and the Rev. W. W. Newbould are otherwise singularly well adapted to carryon his work, possessing, as they do respectively, the faculty of generalization and the critical mind which were combined in Mr. Watson with such happy results.

"The evidences of care and steady work may be traced on every page. The segregates have received much attention-Ranunculus aquatilis, for instance, represented by only 3 in the 1st edition, has here 10 placed under it. Prof. Babington contributes the distribution of the fruticose Rubi; the Roses remain much as before. Detailed distribution of the Callitriches is given, 6 species being enumerated. The Hieracia have received much attention, no fewer than 20 segregates being added. Galinsoga parviflora is inserted as naturalized in Surrey and Middlesex. To all who are interested in County Floras, or in the general subject of plant distribution in Britain, Topographical Botany' is indispensable.”—Journal of Botany, Sept. 1883.

The Welsh MS. from which this is printed dates from the early part of the fifteenth century (it may have been copied from one of greater age), and contains in its first part a translation from the Queste du Saint Greal. The second part is taken from the second part of the Histoire du Graal. This Welsh translation has an independent value as showing what Welsh names correspond to the French ones, and as containing traces of the concurrent British legends of King Arthur and his Knights.

10 L'énumération, par ordre chronologique, de tous les missels imprimés antérieurement à l'année 1531;

By most persons this "dark age," as it has been termed, will scarcely be supposed capable of affording materials for such a history; and indeed, with the exception of a very few examples given by Strutt, Astle, and Shaw, no opportunity had been afforded to the public of judging of the marvellous beauty and excessive intricacy of the ornamentation and designs of Anglo-Saxon and Irish Manuscripts, until the publication of my "Palæographia Sacra Pictoria," in which I devoted many plates to these marvels of Art.

"The Volumes form the most important contributions, not only to Botany, but to Natural Science, which have ever been published in India, and they have been of the greatest service to us throughout our labours. It is admitted that Dr. Wight has accomplished a great work, which is as essential to the student of the Indian Flora, as Sowerby's English Botany is in Britain.”— HOOKER AND THOMSON.

"It is a book of really vast learning. The large quantity of facts gathered together and indexed, and the useful tables with which the book abounds, will always give to it a certain value. Wyman's Bibliography of Printing with Notes,

and Illustrations, compiled by E. C. BIGMORE and C. W. H. WYMAN, double columns, with many Portraits, Colophons, Printers' Marks, and other typographical curiosities, Roxburghe, £6. 6s

1880-86

This great work has been advancing steadily under the direction of its projectors, Mr. Charles Wyman and Mr. Bigmore, assisted by Mr. William Blades, Mr. Hessels of Cambridge, Mr. Goebel of Stuttgart, Mr. Mohr of Strassburg, Mr. De Vinne of New York, and Mr. John Southmard.

The memoirs of individuals and of printing firms have, in all cases where possible, been submitted to and corrected by the person most competent to perform the task in an authoritative manner, and hence, the quantity of material thus got together for the History of Printing and Printers is invaluable to the future historian.

Wyman's Bibliography of Printing :

BIGMORE and C. W. H. WYMAN'S Bibliography of Printing, with notes and illustrations, Vol. III, T-Z, inclusive, sinall 4to. hf. bd. 218

1886

This volume completes this excellent work. Vols. I and II may still be had at £2. 12s 6d each. "With the present number is completed the BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PRINTING," the last instalment of the work appearing in this issue. It is exactly ten years ago (January 15, 1876), since this Bibliography was commenced, and it affords us much gratification to have been thus able to bring this laborious and comprehensive work to a successful issue. This Bibliography has not been a mere record of the bare titles of books; but the biographical, historical, and critical notes with which it is enriched are of permanent literary value; and, to the future historian of the Art preservative, the compilation now completed will prove of the utmost value, both in directing him to reliable sources of information, and also in affording him a storehouse of facts and data not to be met with elsewhere. In bringing the work to a close, we would avail ourselves of this opportunity to tender our best thanks to the many friends, at home and abroad, whose kind co-operation has so materially contributed to make our List of Books on Printing the fullest and most comprehensive that has ever been issued. It should be added that the Bibliography of Printing now completed is published in book form, in three handsome volumes, by Mr. B. Quaritch, of Piccadilly."-The Printing Times, December, 1885
