....My fon, enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men; avoid it, påss not by it, turn from it, and pass away. For they fleep not, except they have done mifchief; and their fleep is taken away, unless they caufe fome to fall: they eat the bread of wickedness. But the path of the just is as the dawning light, which fhineth more and more until noon-day..

....My fon, attend to my words; let them not depart from thine eyes keep them in the midft of thine heart for they are life unto thofe who find them. Keep thy heart with all diligence: ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be eftablished. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: 1emove thy foot from evil.

....Truft in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not to thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wife in thine own eyes; fear the Lord, and depart from evil. My fon, despise not the chaftening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction for whom the Lord loveth, he correcteth, even as a father the fon in whom he delighteth,

....My fon, if finners entice thee, confent thou not. Walk in the way of good men, and keep the path of the righteous for the upright fhall dwell in the land: but the wicked fhall be cut off from the earth, and the tranfgreffors fhall be rooted out of it.

....There be many that fay, Who will fhew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou haft put gladnefs into my heart more than worldly men have, in the time that their corn and their wine increase. Thy favor is life, and thy loving kindness is better than life. In thy prefence is tulnefs of joy and at thy right hand are pleafures forevermore.

....My fon, give unto God thy heart: behold, to obey him is better than facrifice. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wifdom; and to depart from wickedness is understanding. He hath fhewed thee what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

.... The wicked, through pride, will not feek after God: the fool hath faid in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, and have done abominable works. God is angry with the wicked every day; and will rain upon them fnares, fire and brimftone, an horrible tempeft; which fhall be the portion of their cup.

.... Wherewith fhall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to the word of God. His word is a light to the feet, and a lamp to the path. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the foul : the teftimony of the Lord is fure, making wite the fim. ple. The ftatutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlight. ening the eyes: More to be defired are they than fine gold; fweeter alfo than honey, and the honey comb : and in keeping of them there is great reward.

...Bieffed is the man, who walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of finners, nor fitteth in the feat of the fcornful but his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he fhall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water and whatfoever he doth thall profper.

....Bleffed is he that confidereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preferve him, and keep him alive; and he fhall be bleffed in the earth. The Lord will ftrengthen him upon the bed of languifhing; and will make his bed comfortable in fickness.

....Lord, who fhall abide in thy tabernacle? Who fhall dwell in thy Holy Zion? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteoufnels, and fpeaketh the truth from his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor: but he honoreth them, who fear the Lord. He that doeth these things fhall never be deftroyed.

....How forcible are right words! A word fitly fpoken is like apples of gold in pictures of filver. I faid I will take heed to my ways, that I fin not with my tongue; I will keep my mouth with a bridle.

....The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous fheweth mercy and giveth: He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his children are blef. fed. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: though he fall, he fhall not be utterly caft down; for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.

....I have been young but now am old; yet have I not feen the righteous forfaken. I have feen the wicked in great power, and fpreading himfelf like a green bay-tree yet he paffed away, and, lo, he was not; yea, I fought him, but he could not be found.

....Come, ye children, hearken unto me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is he, who defireth life, and loveth many days, that he may fee good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from fpeaking guile depart from evil and do good; feek peace, and purfue it.

....The Lord taketh pleasure in them, who fear him, and who hope in his mercy. The Lord is nigh unto them, who are of a broken heart. This poor man cried, and he faved him out of all his troubles. Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord deli righteou

vereth him out of them all. Mark the perfe& man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace,

.... Ceale from anger, and forfake wrath fret not thyfelf because of evil doers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity: for they fhall foon be cut down as the grafs. Truft in the Lord, and do good; fo fhalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

....Whom have 1 in Heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I defire befides thee. My flefh and my heart fail; but God is the ftrength of my heart, and my portion forever. It is good for me to draw near to God for, lo, they who are far from thee fhall perifh. When my father and my mother forfake me, then the Lord will take me up.

.... Who can understand his errors? Cleanfe thou me from fecret faults; keep me back alfo from prefumptuous fias: let them not have dominion over me. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy fight, O Lord my God.

....I will praife thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and curiously wrought. How precious alfo are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the fum of them! It I fhould count them, they are more in number than the fand; when I awake, I am fill with thee. Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts and fee if there any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlating.

....A fool is wifer in his own conceit than feven reafonable men. Before honor is humility: but pride goeth before deftruction; and an haughty fpirit before a fall. An bigh look, and a proud heart is fin.

....These fix things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands which fhed innocent blood, an heart that devifeth wicked imaginations, feet which be swift in running to mischief, a falfe witness who fpeaketh lies, and him who foweth difcord among brethren.

....Surely the ferpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better. The words of a talebearer are as wounds. Where no wood is there the fire goeth out; to where there is no tale-bearer the ftrife ceafeth.

....Is not this the faft that God hath chofen? To loofe the bands of wickedness,to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppreffed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are caft out to thy houfe, and when thou feeft the naked, that thou cover him? Then fhall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health fpring forth fpeedily; and thy righteoufnefs fhall go before thee: the glory of the Lord fhall be thy rear-ward.

....If thou draw out thy foul to the hungry, and fatisfy the afflicted foul; then fhall thy light rife in obfcurity, and thy darkness be as the noon-day and the Lord fhall guide thee continually, and fatisty thy foul in drought and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

....If thou refrain from doing thy pleasure on the Sabbath, my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and fhalt honor him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleafure, nor fpeaking thine own words: then fhalt thou delight thy felf in the Lord, and I will canfe thee to ride on the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
