Resolved, That the Treasurer of the Diocese be directed to cancel the arrearage of St. John's Church, Bristol, upon payment of $50 by the Parish.

The Parish of St. Luke's Church. Cannelton, is in arrears $178. An abatement of 25 per cent. is asked for. The Committee recommend the adoption of the following resolution :

Resolved, That the Treasurer of the Diocese be directed to cancel the arrearage of St. Luke's Church, Cannelton, upon payment of $133 50 by the Parish.

The Parish of St. Paul's, Jeffersonville, is in arrears $159. The Committee recommend the adoption of the following resolution :

Resolved, That the Treasurer of the Diocese be directed to cancel the arrearage of St. Paul's Church, Jeffersonville, upon payment of $12 50 by the Parish.

After this report the Committee would express their satisfaction that so few of the Parishes ask for abatement of the amounts assessed against them; but they deeply regret the necessity of reporting upon so large a number of Parishes as delinquent. They feel it to be a great wrong to the Bishops that they should be asked to live upon faith only, or upon borrowed money, or by courtesy of the Diocesan Treasurer. They think it an equally great wrong to the Parishes that they should be allowed to be so neglectful of their first financial duty-their duty towards those highest in their service for Jesus' sake-their chief Pastors in the Lord. Facts laid before the Committee show that the Churches make that which should be first to be last. The Parish looks out for itself as an isolated congregation, and gives the fag end of its offerings to the Diocese. It pays for its rector, its music, its improvements, its comfort within itself, and if anything be left, applies it upon the Diocesan assessment for the support of the Bishops, and then asks for time or relief upon the balance. It ought not so to be. It is a burning shame to the Diocese. The Committee know whereof they speak. One Parish reporting an expenditure of $4,000 for Parochial purposes and work, did not pay one cent of its Diocesan assessment until after the sitting of this Convention. Another Parish reporting a Parochial expenditure of $3,400, has paid only $50 of its assessment. Another Parish reporting an expenditure of $2,750, has paid

only $125 for the Diocesan Fund. Another Parish reporting $3,000 Parochial expenditure, has paid nothing of last year's assessment, and is in arrears for a balance upon that of the preceding year. Another still, reporting amount paid for Parish. uses and works, is in arrears the full amount of its last assessment. And so of others. Had it not been for the courtesy of the Treasurer in advancing money for the benefit of this Fund, sometimes to the amount of $2,000, and for their ability to meet their needs by calling upon their personal friends, the Bishops would have come to grief long ago, The Committee is not sure that such has not been the case as it is. At any rate, the Churches have done very nearly their best to have it so, and the Committee do not recommend the adoption of a resolution. that it shall be so any longer.

On motion of Rev. Mr. Large, it was

Resolved, That the Trustees of the Diocese be, and they are hereby authorized and directed, out of the proceeds of the sale of the eighty acres of land in the State of Illinois, which they have been duly authorized to sell, and out of the proceeds of the sale of the two lots owned by this Diocese in the city of Indianapolis, to apply the same to the objects hereinafter mentioned; purchase land and erect an Episcopal house or mansion thereon in the city of Indianapolis or vicinity, or purchase land and house already erected in Indianapolis or its vicinity, for the use of the Bishop and his successors, in accordance with their best judgment.

The Rev. J. L. Gay then addressed the Convention upon the merits and claims of the Sunday School Union and Church Book Society.

The Committee on St. Agnes' Hall reported as follows:

REPORT:

The Committee to which was referred so much of the Assistant Bishop's Address as refers to the Diocesan School at Terre

subject before said Convention, and to suggest that the Nicene Creed in the original Greek, as set forth by the Holy Catholic Church in her Ecumenical Councils, previous to the division of the East and West, be printed before the Articles in the Prayer Book, and that an exact translation of the Creed so set forth, be made for insertion in the Liturgy and offices of the Church.

The preamble and resolution were passed by the Convention.

On motion of the Rev. Mr. Averill, it was

Resolved, That in accordance with the recommendation of the Assistant Bishop, the Committee on the State of the Church be instructed to prepare a form of Parochial Letters Dimissory. The Committee on Accounts presented the following

REPORT:

The Committee on Accounts respectfully report that they have examined the Accounts of the Treasurer of the Diocese, with the accompanying vouchers, and find them in all things

correct.

In our examination of the Treasurer's Report we discover that he has most generously made advances to meet the current expenses of the Diocese, which kindness your Committee duly appreciate, but feel that he should not be asked to continue to advance funds for carrying on the work of the Church, when so many of the Parishes are in arrears to the Convention.

We find that the Pan-Anglican Council Fund owes the Treas urer of the Diocese, a balance of one hundred and ninety-four dollars and seventy-nine cents, which balance should be paid, and therefore propose the following:

Resolved, That the Treasurer be authorized to charge to the General Diocesan Fund the balance due him on the Pan-Anglican Council Fund.

Your Committee cannot close this report without some expression of the obligation of this Convention to the Treasurer of the Diocese, for the ability with which he has conducted the finances of the same, and therefore offer the following:

Resolved, That the thanks of this Convention are hereby tendered to the Treasurer, for the very able manner in which

he has discharged the duties of his office. All of which is

respectfully submitted.

(Signed.)

THOMAS J. TAYLOR, Chairman.
