2d. In the fourth Century, Lactantius says (9): It is therefore the Catholick Church only, which retains the true Worship. This Church is the Fountain of Truth, it is the House of Faith, it is the Temple of God. If any one either comes not into this Church, or departs from it, bis eternal SALVATION IS DESPERATE. No one must bere flatter bimfelf Obftinately; For his Soul and Salvation is at Stake.

In the fame Century S. Chryfoftom: (10) We know, that Salvation belongs to the CHURCH ALONE; and that no one can partake of Christ, nor BE SAV'D, out of the Catholick Church, and the Catholick Faith.

Again [13] We fay, you are all highly guilty, not of other Men's Crimes, but of that of Schifm, from which deteftable Sacrilege NO ONE OF YOU can fay he is innocent, as long as he does not communicate with the Unity of all Nations.

The Catholick Council of Zerta, an. 412, in a Synodical Letter, written by S. Auguftin, tells the Donatifts: [14] Therefore WHOEVER IS SEPARATED from this Catholick Church, how innocently and well foever he thinks he lives, yet for this Crime only, that he is Separated from the Unity of Chrift, he will not have Life, but the Anger of God REMAINS UPON HIM.

So writing to a [15] Convert, S. Augustin fays: In the Catholick Church there are both good

For tho' the ConverJation of fome of them appears commendable; yet their Separation from the Church MAKES THEM BAD, according to that of our Saviour: He, who is not with me, is against me; and he, who gathers not with me, Scatters, St. Luke

And Speaking of Catholick Bishops, whom the Donatifts accus'd, as they did Pope Marcellinus, Marcellus, Silvefter, and Melchiades: [16] 'Tis a great and glorious Comfort, says he, for any one of us, to be falfely accus'd, as the Church it felf is, by the Enemies of the Church. But the Defence of the Church does not confift in the Defence of thofe Men, whom they unjustly accufe. For let Marcellinus, Marcellus, Silvefter, Melchiades &c. be what you pleafe, it does not in the leaft prejudice the Catholick Church, which is Spread over the World. We are neither to be crown'd for their Innocence, nor condemn'd for their Sins. If they were good; they were cleanfed, on the Catholick Floor like Corn: If they were bad;

From hence S. Auguftin concludes, that [17] a Chriftian ought to fear nothing fo much, as to be Separated from the Body of Christ, that is, from the Church of Chrift. For if he be Separated from the Body of Chrift, HE IS NOT A MEMBER OF CHRIST. See other [18] Places in the Margin, and what was quoted under the first Question, Num. III.

Again: Hold moft firmly, fays [22] he, and without any Doubt, that no one, who is Baptiz'd out of the Catholick Church, can partake of eternal Life, if before the End of this Life he BE NOT RESTOR'D to the Catholick Church, and incorporated in it.
