They ought to have believed both; and we ought to believe both.

We know that our Lord has lived on earth in a suffering state,-that He has suffered and died, and ascended up to heaven. Now let us beware that we do not fall into the same mistake as the Jews. They overlooked our Lord's first coming and humiliation; let us not overlook His second coming and reign of glory.

The last thing I shall speak of in which David was a type of our Lord was his desiring to find a place for the temple of the Lord. David's loving heart felt grief that he should dwell in a house of cedar, and the ark of the Lord in curtains. See how warmly he expresses himself in Psalm cxxxii. 3, 4, 5,— "Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed; I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids, until I find out a place for the Lord, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob." David sent for Nathan, and said how much he wished to build a temple for the Lord; and Nathan encouraged him to do it. But the Lord did not allow it; He would not allow a man of blood to build Him a temple, but promised that his son Solomon should do so instead. We see here, in David's desire to

find a place for the God of Jacob to rest in, a type of our Lord Jesus Christ, who longed to build a temple for God-not a temple made with hands, but a resting-place in the hearts of His people. As we shall have to speak of this in Solomon's history, I shall not say more of it here, except to remind you that it is your heart that the Lord delights to rest in. He does not desire a splendid earthly temple, such as the Jews had, but he does desire to come and dwell in your hearts. Jesus, you know, says, Rev. iii. 20,-" Behold, I stand at the door and knock if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.' You see He says, if any man will open the door He will come in. So, if any child will go to the Lord Jesus and pray for His Spirit, that Spirit will be given, and Jesus himself will dwell in that child's heart. See, then, that Jesus reigns in your heart now, that you may reign with Him in His kingdom hereafter. Let Him be your Prophet to teach you, your Shepherd to guide and keep you, and He will be, too, your Saviour to save you.

Often think of the meek, forgiving spirit that David showed, and try to be like him; for this is, too, to be like your blessed Lord.

Imitate David, too, in his prayerfulness. Seven times a-day he praised the Lord (Psa. cxix. 164), and his delight in the Word of God was such, as may put many of us to shame, I fear.

I should like you to find some texts in which David speaks of his love for God's Word, and I would ask you if you feel the same? Do you love to read your Bible? Is it a pleasure to you, or is it a task? If you feel that it is not a pleasure, that other books are more interesting, go and ask your Saviour to make you love it; ask Him, whenever you read it, to send His Holy Spirit into your heart to make you able to understand the wonderful things that are written in His blessed Word. Remember David's prayer, "Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law." (Psa. cxix.)

If you pray earnestly in this way, you will soon begin to love your Bible, you will soon find beauties in it that you never saw before; and more than this, the Holy Spirit that shows you the beauty of God's Word, will show you also the beauty and preciousness of Him who inspired it, and you will be able to say with the woman of Samaria (John iv.),-" Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we

have heard Him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world."

SOLOMON.

THE next personal type of our Lord Jesus Christ is Solomon. That he is a type we know, because what the Lord said of Solomon by Nathan the Prophet, is applied to the Messiah by St. Paul. 2 Sam. vii. 12, 13, 14,—“ And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish His kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will establish the throne of His kingdom for ever. I will be His Father, and He shall be my Son." And verse 16,-" And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee thy throne shall be established for ever."

Now turn to Heb. i. 5, where the very same words are spoken of our Lord,-"For unto which of the angels said He at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to me a Son?"
