During the past year we have succeeded in organising a Parish school, in which twenty-four children have been taught and (in a degree) clothed. Our association for aiding the poor, is now in the second year of its efficient labors. Both these institutions are mainly sustained by the personal efforts of a few Christian women, whose untiring labor of love merits higher commendation than I can give in this brief space. This congregation is in a prosperous condition.

The Rector of this. Parish is thankful to be able to report its continued prosperity. The Vestry and congregation are zealously engaged in the effort to raise a sufficient sum to erect a new and larger Church, which is urgently demanded by the wants of the Parish. It is expected that the building will be begun in a few months.

The Rector is not able to report accurately the amount of contributions for religious purposes made by this congregation for the current year. He has good reason to believe, however, that it has not fallen behind other years. He knows also that the benevolence of the people of his charge has embraced a great variety of objects. Of these he would specify, in addition to the regular Communion Offerings for the poor, and the monthly collections in behalf of Missions, the contribution of $70 towards assisting weak Parishes in Maryland in the support of ministers-of from $50 to $75 to the Society for the promotion of Evangelical knowledge-of $50 towards the erection of the Church in the Colony of Maryland in Liberia-and of about $50 for education in China and Africa. Other contributions, the amount of which he is not able to give, have been made. May, 1849. S. G. GASSAWAY, Rector.

APPENDIX.

He officiates

The undersigned took charge of this Parish in June last. regularly at St. Mark's Church, except on the third Sunday in each month, when, by resolution of the Vestry, his services are transferred to St. Luke's Chapel, a small edifice under the patronage of St. Mark's. The condition of this Parish is materially the same as in the reports of the last several years.

A Sunday school for white children is in operation; also a class of adult persons of color meets every Sunday morning for instruction by the Rec

tor.

Divine service is celebrated every other Sunday evening at Harford

Furnace, and is numerously attended. I would say here with the hope that it may catch the eye of some clergyman, that the upper part of this parish offers a field of usefulness. It is a rich and healthy country. Many years ago this parish had a chapel there; nothing now remains but the enclosed burying yard, and several families who have not lost their first love.

A nearer approach has been made within the present year, in this parish, to the primitive practice of weekly communion. The Holy Eucharist is now administered on three Sundays out of every four, besides on the special festivals of the Church.

Some four or five hundred dollars of the chapel debt have been paid. All we need is cordial co-operation on the part of the parishioners to effect the payment of the balance, and secure an encouraging state of our affairs. We have of late received in the sudden removal of one from the church militant well known throughout the parish, a solemn warning to "work while it is day, for the night cometh when no man can work."

Georgetown Roads P. O., May 31, 1849.
