He acknowledges in ver. 13, even His enemies, to be God's sword. Neither man nor circumstances can have any power against us except as He permits; and there is no flying from God's hand except by flying to it. Let us seek to humble ourselves “under His mighty Hand.”

June 20.-Ps. xviii. In verses 32 to 36 of this beautiful Psalm, notice the gifts of God to the spiritual warrior. And let us dwell specially on God's girding with strength. All our supplies are direct from Him. Like David (1 Sam. xvii. 38, 39) we must be stripped of our own ar nour before we can fight God's battles.

June 21.-Ps. xix. 4, 5, 6. A wondrous emblem of the Sun of Righteousness (Mal. iv. 2), the Bridegroom of the Church. As a sun He shines on His people, to enlighten (Jno. i. 4; Num. vi. 25). To quicken (Ps. lxx. 20). To render fruitful (Deut. xxxiii. 14). To strengthen (Jud. v. 31). To reveal sinfulness (Cant. i. 6). To guide (Job. xxii. 28). Yea, He is (Acts xxvi. 13).

June 22.-Ps. xx.

a Light above the brightness of the Sun"

Trace the fulfilment of first four verses in Heb.

v. 7; Luke xxii. 43; Is. liii. 10, 11. The "desire of His own Heart" in Jno. xvii. was sevenfold. I. "That they may know Thee." 2. "That they may be one even as we are." 3. "That they might have My joy.” 4. "That they may be sanctified." 5. "That they may be with Me where I am." 6. "That they may behold My glory." 7. “That the love wherewith Thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them." June 23.-Ps. xxi. Pre-eminently descriptive of Christ's risen triumphs, and shared by those who have passed in, to be for ever with the Lord in virtue of them; for He hath made them to be "kings " (Rev. v. 10). See marginal readings of ver. 6, and remember that "the joy set before Him" (Heb. xii. 2) was the winning of His Church.

June 24.-Ps. xxii. 14. The heart of Christ was "melted like wax by the flame of God's fierce judgment of sin. Our hearts are melted by the foving beams of the Sun of Righteousness that they may be "set as a seal upon His heart for ever" (Cant. viii. 6).

June 25.-Ps. xxiii. 5. Anointing with oil was the sign of setting apart and consecrating to God's service; and typified enduement with the Holy Ghost. Let us claim this blessing more earnestly. We need it specially for knowledge of His will, and for service (see I Jno. ii. 20-27). We have the Holy Ghost abiding in us. We need His power set free "to work within us mightily."

June 26.-Ps. xxiv. 7. We may look at this in a two-fold aspect. Ist, Christ's triumphant ascension into glory (Heb. ix. 12; i. 3-6`; Is. lxiii. 1-3); 2nd, as His entrance into the souls of men. "Behold I stand at the

door and knock" (Rev. iii. 20; Is. lvii. 15; Eph. iii. 17; Zech. ix. 9; Jno. xiv. 23). Are we each consciously “an habitation of God through the Spirit?" (Eph. ii. 22).

June 27.-Ps. xxv. 9. Here is one of God's promises of guidance. It is for the meek. "What is 'meekness?' It consists of trust and surrender in equal proportions. Are you so meek that you are willing to trust Him and surrender all to Him?'

JUNE 28.-Ps. xxvi. It is wonderful to notice how fully the Lord identifies His people with Himself. His righteousness is ours, and God sees us in Him without spot (Cant. iv. 7). "Ye are complete in Him (Col. ii. 10). Even the "well done" by and bye will be of the freest grace, and we shall only be able to say, "Lord, Thy pound hath gained," etc. JUNE 29.-Ps. xxvii. 13. Here again, as so often we get just the reverse of the world's wisdom. Man says, 66 Seeing is believing," Faith says, "Believe to see." It is the best remedy for fainting. (See Ex. xvi. 10; Jno. xi. 40).

JUNE 30.-Ps. xxviii. 9. "We are Thy people" is a good plea (1s. lxiii. 19; lxiv. 9). His people are "His inheritance," "His purchased possession," "All His delight" (Ps. xvi. 3). Let us seek to be more entirely under His rule, marg. (Micah vii. 14).

Scripture Reading and Prayer Union.

DURING the past month our increase has been 791 Members, and 553 Associates, making our registered total on May 10th, to be 52,432 Members, and 22,009 Associates.

NEW TESTAMENT NOTES.

These have been commenced in LIVING WATERS this month, more especially for Associates. Some few have written regretting the change, but it is really impossible to please all. We are convinced that the proposed change will be best for the Union generally.

Notices of Books.

By A. M.

Nisbet & Co. Price 2s. 6d.

ABIDE IN CHRIST. It is always a joy to get another book which brings forward the very highest possibilities of faith, because that faith is fastened on the One in whom is all might, and all power. This is a book of that kind, and we most heartily mention it to our readers. It is full of "thoughts on the blessed life of fellowship with the Son of God," and this subject is expounded most winningly, showing how that fellowship may be kept up unbroken, by simple obedience to the simple command, "Abide in Me." The writer is a clergyman at the Cape. The preface begins thus: "During the life of Jesus on earth, the word chiefly used when speaking of the relationship of the disciples to Himself was, 'Follow Me.' When about to leave for Heaven, He gave them a new word 'Abide in Me.'"-S. M. N.

MESSRS. BAGSTER'S BIBLES.

We have always preferred and recommended to our friends the Bibles printed by Messrs. Bagster and Co., and we are sure that those who know them would not readily choose any others. We are, therefore, very glad to be able to announce that they are now issued at a reduced price. The small size can now be had in strong binding with flap edges and elastic band, for 3s. 6d., and the medium size for 5s. There is added in each a large quantity of information most useful to the student and the teacher, also an alphabetical index to the Scriptures, which will be found of the greatest service. Several maps are also given. All who want a Bible for their own use, or for a present, will do well to ask their bookseller for those by Messrs. Bagster. They are sure to be pleased with them.

THE GREAT PROPHECIES CONCERNING THE Gentiles, thE JEWS, AND THE CHURCH OF GOD. By G. H. Pember, M.A. Published by Hodder and Stoughton. Price 7s. 6d. This volume contains a careful and patient investigation of the leading prophecies of the Old and New Testaments, and is well worth the attention of all students of prophecy, as throwing considerable light upon the difficulties which surround the subject.

THE MINISTRY OF HEALING OR MIRACLES OF CURE IN ALL AGES. By A. J. Gordon, D.D., of Boston. Published by Hodder and Stoughton. Price 3s. 6d.

A most remarkable and interesting book. It treats very fully this most important subject, and shows conclusively by many examples, that there is a wonderful reality in what is called "healing by faith." The amount of testimony adduced leaves no doubt that "gifts of healing" have certainly been bestowed on some few at all times.

THE REIGN OF CHRIST ON EARTH. By D. T. Taylor. Revised and edited by H. S. Hasting. Published by Bagster and Co.

We heartily welcome this valuable work, and would strongly advise all who doubt the truth of the pre-millennial advent of Christ, or who wish to confirm their views of its truth, to procure and study this book. It is a perfect compendium of opinions on the subject from the earliest years of Christianity, and its perusal cannot fail to awaken in many hearts a more earnest waiting for the Lord in a life of constant readiness for His coming.

THE WEEKLY TRACT SOCIETY, which issues excellent narrative tracts in large type for working people, every week, is for a short time making one-third price grants of the tracts issued by the society. Thus for 5s., 15s. worth of useful tracts can be obtained. As the quantity set apart for distribution on these conditions is very limited, early application should be made to the Secretary, Mr. Elliot Stock, 62, Paternoster Row, London, E.C.
