NOTICES OF THE PRESS.

"A series of really practical papers on 'the foundation truths,' marked by much freshness of thought and clearness of Scriptural exposition. Even the advanced saint may find much here to ponder; but for weak and halting believers it is, indeed, a most valuable little work, which will, we doubt not, be used of God in the upbuilding of many."-Word and Work.

"Clearly and forcibly this little volume puts before us the foundation truths' of the Gospel, and exposes inconsistencies and false forms of belief. It is admirably adapted to guide a troubled self-scrutinizing soul to the rest found in believing Christ's Word."—Christian. "A useful devotional work, full of earnestness and fervour."-Baptist.

THERE are many reasons why there is so much Scripture reading, and so little comparative growth in Christian experience. And we are going to touch upon one which is perhaps as important as any.

To every Bible reader we say most emphatically, READ FOR YOURSELF—that is, have yourself in view first and foremost, the supply of your own spiritual needs, and what lesson you are yourself to learn.

So much is lost by the too common practice of our reading for other people. Not, of course, that any of us profess to be doing so; but it grows upon us, often so unconsciously, that we hardly suspect ourselves in the matter. And it is not saying too much to assert that the more anxiety we feel for the spiritual wants of others, the more we are liable, almost imperceptibly, to fall into the habit. And it is especially a danger to Christian workers of every sort.

Christian

Authors,-those who are endowed

This paper will form part of a small volume which the Editor is preparing as a Manual of HelP IN SCRIPTURAL STUDY. He hopes that the volume may be ready in time for Christmas, and he would ask the prayers of his readers in its preparation.

with talents for writing what others are to read, are too ready to be on the look out for thoughts which may be helpful to their readers. Ministers and preachers are constantly in search of something new and striking for their addresses. Sunday School teachers and leaders of Bible Classes have their classes in view, just as much as the preacher his congregation; and they make their private reading to bear upon their class lessons,* and carefully note all that "will do nicely" for their particular classes. Parents are apt to think of the Scripture lesson which they are to give to their children. District visitors have their districts "on the brain," and mark well any thoughts which occur suitable to the cases they

meet.

But in doing so they run the risk of losing very much for themselves. There is such a thing as a spiritual selfishness of a very sanctified sort. And it is a very subtle snare when in Scripture study we forget ourselves for ever so little. "Take heed unto thyself," as well as "unto the doctrine," was St. Paul's advice to Timothy (1 Tim. iv. 16); and it contains all the wisdom of Divine inspiration. In our anxiety to get right doctrine for those we have in any way to teach, let us not forget that it is to ourselves in the first place that we are to apply it and bring it home.

*

Sunday School Teachers and Bible Class Leaders have sometimes wished to leave our Scripture Union because they had no time to read our portions as well as to study those in which their classes are engaged. These are in great danger of reading for their classes instead of for themselves. They had far better give up the classes. It is a great mistake to suppose that they "have no time" for private reading; it is really the class-study for which they have not time.
