5-6) bringing forth barrenness and desolation, and one who abides in Him (verses 7-8), perpetual fruitfulness. The roots are right, no wonder the leaves, i.e., every small thing about us, are green.

March 14. Ch. xviii. 6. The answer is at once on the lips when the will is entirely surrendered. "Yea, Lord, it is lawful for Thee to do as Thou wilt with Thine own."

March 15.-Ch. xix. Jeremiah's obedience is strikingly prominent. Ever since his first demur in Ch. i. 6, there never seems to have been a moment's question, however strange or difficult the Lord's bidding seemed."Go forth," verse 2. "Then came" (see ver. 14). Contrast with Jonah's disobedience.

March 16.-Ch. xx. 9. (See ch. v. 14). Even here, through reproach, derision, though his “ days were consumed with shame," he "could not stay." It is a grand thing to obey at any and every cost!

March 17.—Ch. xxi. 8-9. Abiding in the city (the world)-death. Going forth without the camp-life. See the solemn words in Luke

xiv. 33.

There must not even be a “looking back” (Luke ix. 62). March 18.-Ch. xxii. 20. "All thy lovers are destroyed." Let us have a true heart-searching as to what we are clinging most to. Do we feel that if stripped of these earthly things, we should be able to say with satisfied hearts, "Thou remainest." Does Jesus Himself satisfy alone, fully?

March 19.-Ch. xxiii. 24. The thought that He fills heaven and earth is joy to the whole-hearted believer. We cannot go anywhere without being surrounded by His immediate Presence.

March 20.-Ch. xxiv. "Set before the Temple," "Weighed in the balances,” “Tried by fire." We may deceive others as to our reality, but God sees us exactly as we are, and looks for pure work done with a pure heart (1 John iii. 3; Prov. xx. 11).

March 21.-Ch. xxv. 7. How slow we are to learn this lesson ! Cain brought the fruit of his own toil, and to his offering "the Lord had not respect.”

March 22.-Ch. xxvi. It has ever been the same story of rejection which has followed God's faithful servants since the days of Abel onwards, till it culminated in that awful cry, "Away with Him; crucify Him" (See Gen. xlix. 23; Ex. ii. 15; Heb. xi. 32-39).

March 23.-Ch. xxvii. 12. God often allows the consequences of our mistakes and sins to weigh heavily upon us for a long time; but finally (ver. 22) His purposes shall be accomplished. Though He tarry, wait in brokenness of spirit upon Him. "At the fourth watch, Jesus cometh."

March 24. Ch. xxviii. II (last clause). Because he was content to obey, and leave all to God. When everything seems going wrong, against the truth, do we know what it is calmly to go on in God's way in perfect tranquillity of soul? "Stayed" on Him.

March 25.-Ch. xxix. 9, 31. "I sent him not." Solemn epitaph written by the Spirit of God, alas! over many a worker to-day. Are we always "under authority" as to whatever we do or say?

March 26.-Ch. xxx. 17. Would that we could sound

Wonderful words of promise and hope! them in the ears of every lost one; their

very shame, the irresistible claim upon His mercy.

March 27.-Ch. xxxi. 2, 3. "The wilderness" is about the last place in which we naturally expect to find rest, and yet, when the Lord leads His people into the plain (Ezek. iii. 22, 23), He comes down with them and stands with them there (Luke vi. 17). Lonely child of God, in your isolation He will "appear" unto you, and "speak" to your listening soul.

March 28. Ch. xxxii. 41. In the preceding part of the chapter we see the Lord inflicting judgments unwillingly, under great and continued provocation; here, when He blesses His people, it is with His whole heart.

[ocr errors]

March 29.-Ch. xxxiii. 16. Can we be called by this name? Are our ways, our surroundings, as well as our words, openly consistent with His righteousness? Is "Holiness unto the Lord our very atmosphere? March 30.-Ch. xxxiv. Are we fully "free?" From condemnation on account of guilt? (Rom. viii. 1). From fear of man? (Prov. vii. 25). Death? (Heb. ii. 15). What can free us? Perfect love (1 John iv. 18). Are we free from sin itself? (Rom. vi. 7). What can free us from this? The precious blood (1 John i. 7, 9). To remain "free,” what attitude must we maintain? That of constant identification with Christ in death and resurrection (Rom. vi. 6, etc.)

March 31.-Ch. xxxv. Beautiful picture of a consecrated life. Separated from all appearance of evil-all that is merely of this world, and dwelling as pilgrims and strangers on earth, ready to "follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth." Is it ours?

Scripture Reading and Prayer Union.

1. Every MEMBER reads daily the same Chapter of the Old Testament, and a short Evening Portion of the New. ASSOCIATES read only the New Testament portion, any time during the day.

2. Persons of all ages and all denominations may join.

All readers of "CHRISTIAN PROGRESS" are invited to join this Union, either as Members or Associates, and to ask their friends to do so. They should send their full names and addresses (stating whether Rev., Esq., Mr., Mrs., or Miss) to the Rev. ERNEST Boys, Beverley, Sidcup, Kent. One stamp must be enclosed, and a card of Membership will be forwarded.

We have to record an increase during the past month of 1,381 Members, and 1,161 Associates, making our registered total on February 10th to be 60,642 Members, and 28,725 Associates.

OUR WORkers.

We are glad to report that we have now registered over 660 "Workers," each holding a special "Worker's Card, acting as Secretaries for various Associations as follows: Country Villages, 289; Mother's Meetings, 49; Bible Classes, 66; Sunday Schools, 119; Young Ladies' Schools, 97; District and Local Associations, 37. This represents a vast amount of most interesting and useful work. It might, however, be very largely increased if all who could work in this way did so. So many respond to a definite, written invitation to work and start an Association at once who never responded to the general invitation in the Magazines for secretaries to volunteer. Will not some who read this write and offer themselves, and save us the trouble of finding them out and writing to ask them?

PAROCHIAL AND CONGREGATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS.

We are arranging to extend the Union by means of PAROCHIAL ASSOCIATIONS for parishes of the Church of England, and CONGREGATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS for all other denominations; to be introduced with the consent of the clergy or ministers, as a definite Parochial or Congregational organisation. We should like all our Members and Associates to bring the matter before their ministers. For this purpose, papers for laying before ministers have been prepared, and will be sent to any who will make this use of them. In applying for them, they should say whether they wish for those relating to parishes or congregations. Many ministers would be glad to know of these associations.

OUR LONDON AGENTS.

Members and Associates living in London are informed that Messrs. Partridge and Co., 9, Paternoster Row, act as agents for our Union, and will give to all who call for them, circulars of the Union for distribution.

REQUEST FOR PRAYER FOR MARCH.

Several Members having recently written requesting prayer in time of special trial, we propose this month that we should unite in prayer for all the tried ones, that patience under trial may be given, and a happy issue out of it. He to whom all hearts are open will know the special need of each one.
