The organization and acts of the Confederation, established by a large portion of the Irish Nobility, Clergy, and people in the reign of Charles I, for the government of Ireland, through an elective representative body of their own selection, form important and as yet but little understood portions of Irish history. Declaring their allegiance to the King, but resisting the authority of the English Parliament, the Confederates, through their Supreme Council, organized forces, nominated commanders and officials, collected revenue, levied taxes, minted coin, treated with foreign powers, and governed a considerable part of Ireland. The administration thus established was long maintained by the Confederates, not only in opposition to the Government at Dublin and to continuous hostile attacks from the English and Scotch settlers in Ireland, and those associated with them, but also against large military and naval forces despatched from England and Scotland.

Hitherto no attempt has been made to collect or publish in their integrity such authentic original materials as still survive for the clucidation of the history of the Irish Confederation and its transactions in peace and war. To supply this want is the object of the present work, for which important materials, hitherto unprinted, have been obtained from archives in England, Ireland, and on the Continent. 24659 BERINGTON (J.) Dublin, 1875

The best book of its kind yet published, and the only one from which a good general notion of ancient Irish Architecture can be derived. Petrie's work is devoted to proving a theory upon a special subject, and is therefore extremely limited in its range, far from satisfying the desire expressed in the following passage :—

"Whatever opinion may be formed of the dates of Irish buildings, there can be no doubt of their very distinct national character, and that they are highly interesting, and deserve to be better known throughout Europe than has hitherto been the case."-Gentleman's Magazine, Jan. 1864.

24672

One of the most interesting volumes relating to the History of Ireland. The Supplement, comprising pp. 799-950, is of extreme rarity. Although the title bears the imprint of Cologne, it has been clearly ascertained that it was produced under the author's inspection, by a printer named Edmund Finn, at Kilkenny in Ireland.

In most copies of Burke's Hibernia Dominicana, five leaves, pp. 137-146 inclusively, are wanting, having been SUPPRESSED BY AUTHORITY: both of these have those castrations, which are of very rare occurrence. They contain a sketch of James II's expulsion, and of the fortunes of his son and grandson, as well as a statement that the Prince of Orange ordered over 1000 wounded prisoners, taken at the Siege of Limerick, to be burnt alive.
