FIRST EDITION, extremely rare. The difficulty of obtaining a complete copy of the first edition of Bandello is only known to those who, after having waited a quarter of a century to buy one, find, when they come across it at last, that there are eager rivals in the field. It is not likely that such a copy as this will ever again come into the market.

"In point of composition these Novels, although inferior to those of Boccaccio, are written with a degree of vivacity and nature which seldom fails to interest the reader; and which, combined with the singularity of the incidents, will probably secure a durable, although not a very honourable, reputation to the author."-T. The three parts of this collection of witty and indecent verse are seldom found together. Still rarer is it to discover the Mauro perfect, as folios 66-70 are usually cancelled, and even their existence seems to have been unknown to Brunet. These leaves contain a grossly indecent attack upon una Signora, as the table says, una Cortigiana, as the poem itself is entitled.

Giulio Cesare Croce wrote the prose story of Bertoldo from the old folkbook of Marcolfus in the sixteenth century. It became so popular in Italy that he wrote continuations in the lives of Bertoldin and Cacasenno. The three parts were united and versified as above by various writers in collaboration early in the last century.
