Steel Crochet Hook Guaging in the Stem immediately under the Hook, No. 17. Evans' Boar's Head Cotton, No. 8. 2 oz. of bright Geranium color 4-Thread Berlin Wool, only 1 shade removed from intense Scarlet, oz. of middle shade Violet, and oz. of light Emerald Green will be required.

1st Row. Make a chain of 300 stitches with the Thread, and work a row of Dc. The work must not be turned.

2nd Row.-1 long, 2 chain,* 1 long into every 3rd loop, 2 chain, repeat from.*

3rd Row.-1 long on long, 2 chain, repeat.

4th Row.-8 long, the 1st on 1st long, 1 chain, 1 long on long, 2 chain, 1 long on long, 2 chain, 1 long on long, 2 chain, repeat. There should be 3 perfect squares always in every

row.

These 2 last rows are exactly the same as the 2nd and 3rd rows.

16th Row.-Join on the Geranium Wool, work 3 long into successive loops,* 3 chain, 3 long, the 1st into the 4th loop, repeat from.*

17th Row.-4 long,* 3 chain, 3 long, the 1st on 2nd long, repeat from.*

22nd Row.-1 long, 1 chain, miss I loop, 3 long,* 3 chain, 3 long, the 1st into the 4th loop, repeat from.*

23rd Row.-4 long,* 3 chain, 3 long, the 1st into the 4th loop, repeat from.*

24th Row. Before commencing this row crochet the end and continue 4 long,* 3 chain, 4 long, the 1st into 4th loop, repeat from,* crochet the remaining ends, join on the Thread

and work a row of D', then commence as at 2nd row till there are 4 patterns of White and 3 of Colored, work a row of De down the side to correspond with the other side, join on the Green and Violet Wool, work in De 5 stitches of each color alternately, this must be at both sides but not at top or bottom. For the Border on the Ends.

1st Row.-Geranium color Wool, work 3 long, 3 chain, 3 long, the 1st into the 4th loop.

2nd Row.-Crochet Thread, the same as last row, only working the long stitches into the 3 chain.

3rd Row.-Geranium color Wool, same as the last row.

4th Row.-Green Wool, 5 chain, twist the Wool twice over the Hook for all the long stitches in the remaining rows. *5 long under the 3 chain, 5 chain, D under next 3 chain, 5 chain, De under next 3 chain, 5 chain, repeat from.*

5th Row.-Violet Wool,* 5 chain, D on 1st long in last row, 5 chain, D on last long, 5 chain, 5 long under the centre chain of 5, repeat from.*

6th Row.-Geranium Wool,* 5 chain, 5 long under the 5 chain over the long stitches, 5 chain, D under centre of 5, 5 chain, De under centre of 5, repeat from.*

7th Row.-Green Wool,* 5 chain, D on 1st long, 5 chain, De on last long, 5 chain, 5 long under the 5 chain over the long stitches, repeat from.*

8th Row.-Geranium Wool,* 5 chain, 5 long under the 5 chain over the long stitches, 5 chain, D under centre of 5, 5 chain, D under centre of 5, repeat from.*

For the Fringe.

Cut a skein of wool once, then divide the length in three, cut it and use 9 Threads of Geranium, 1 of Violet, and 1 of Green for each Tuft, tie it into the chain of 5 over the long stitches, tie a Tuft at each corner whether there is a chain of 5 or not.

Au Allegorical Tale, from the German.

THERE was once a Prince who had a daughter of such beauty and amiability that all the world spoke of her with enthusiasm. When she walked in her father's princely gardens, it seemed as if spring with its blossoms and clear blue sky was passing over the earth, for her cheeks and forehead resembled roses and lilies, and her lovely eyes the beautiful blue sky.

Not men alone rejoiced in her beauty and mildness, but every object in creation fell under the influence of a peculiar charm in her presence. Flowers opened their cups and petals wider when she passed, that their fragrance might follow her and whisper to her "we love thee;" the birds on perceiving her, called to each other "She comes, she comes," and began with one accord to sing to her their sweetest songs; the young ones hung their little heads over the nest, to peep over at the angel that was passing by; the butterfly fluttered around her lovely head, seeking to rest in her dark locks, and wishing to kiss her cheeks mistaking them for flowers.

Asila (thus was she called) knew not that she spread a charm around her, and thought this welcome of nature arose from the love with which she looked upon it and which filled her heartfor, thought she, it is only necessary to look upon surrounding objects with eyes of love, and love is returned, even by the inanimate children of nature.

When she spoke on the subject with her Courtiers, and these sought to persuade her with the eagerness of flattery that she was a being of a superior order; she used to answer : "Love nature as I do; go amongst her children with an equally happy guileless heart, and you will then find her as near to you as she is to me-and other colder hearts will also think you magicians and supernatural beings."

In the Prince's park (a favorite walk of Asila's) was a rock forming a grotto, and out of which issued a spring making its way along a shady bank until it joined a large neighbouring stream. The gold fishes, the denizens of this spring often saw Asila linger in the grotto, and listened well pleased to the
