Amber, Blue, Scarlet, Green and Violet 4-Thread Berlin Wool, 6 shades of each color, 1 skein of each shade will be required. 1st Row.-Commence with the darkest shade of Scarlet, Steel Pin, cast on 20 stitches on one pin and knit a row forward and back. 2nd Row.-No. 10 Pins, increase double by bringing the Wool forward before every stitch, making in all 40 stitches on the pin. 3rd Row.-No. 10 Pin, knit a plain row back. 4th Row. No. 10 Pins. Join on the next shade, bring the wool forward, knit 2 together, repeat. From the 4th to the 7th row forms the pattern, repeat these rows till the lightest shade of scarlet, then reverse the shades and continue till the darkest shade but one. No. 10 Pins. Darkest shade, plain row. No. 10 Pins. Knit 2 together till the end of the row without bringing the wool forward. Steel Pins. Plain row forward and back, 20 stitches only in this row. This completes one shell. Join on the darkest shade of green, and commence as at first row, after the green shell is completed join on the Violet, then Amber, then Blue. When all the NO. III. E VOL. I. Shells are completed cast off, and sew the two ends together on the wrong side. Double the knitting, and gather it double. Cut a piece of thin Cardboard 3 inches in diameter, also a slip 10 inches long and 1 inch deep, cover both with black Cambric and sew the strip round the circle, this forms the cup to hold the vase, regulate the shells, and sew the knitting to the top of the outside of the cup. Cut a piece of Wire 17 inches long, tie it in a circle, and fasten each division of shell to it inside, or if preferred, a piece of covered Cardboard 5 inches in diameter, and sew each division of shell to it.
