THESE HISTORICAL AND TOPOGRAPHICAL DELINEATIONS
AS A SMALL TRIBUTE OF RESPECT
FOR HIS PUBLIC CONDUCT, AND PRIVATE VIRTUES,
BY HIS OBEDIENT,
AND VERY HUMBLE SERVANT,
J. N. BREWER.
Sept. 1st, 1813.
I SUBMIT to the Public this attempt towards a Topographical Account of Oxfordshire, with the diffidence that may be supposed likely to arise from an endeavour to delineate a county rendered of prominent interest by a distinguished University; and a county which has not been favoured with the labours of a regular historian. Without the appearance of
any undue assumption, -I trust I may be permitted to say that I have used some exertions, connected with industry of research, to render the Work not unsatisfactory. By repeated journeys of investigation; by public advertisement; and by the inspection of papers deposited in va. rious libraries, I have endeavoured to obtain all desirable, original, information concerning the subjects which required notice.
