Now 'ts manifeft, that fhe obliges every Man to approve of this Adoration of the Hot upon pain of damnation; First, because fhe obliges every Man to approve this and all other decrees of the Council of Trent, in the 24th Article of her Creed ; which, as you may find in the 2d Chapter, runs I do alfo without any doubting receive and profefs all other things, that are deliver'd, defin'd and declar'd by the Sacred Canons and General Councils and chiefly by the Itoly Council of Trent, &c. Secondly, because the declares it abfolutely neceffary to Salvation for a Man to profefs this propofition, which is the 15th Article of her Creed, viz. I do alfo profefs, &c. I do alfo receive and ad mit the receiv'd and approv'd Rites of the Catholic Church in the folemn Administration of all the Sacraments before mention'd whereas 'tis notorious, that the Adoration of the Hoft is one of thofe Rites, which attend her. Celebration of the Eucharift

'Tis plain then, that the Church of Rome teaches this Doctrin concerning the Adoration of the Hoft; and that the obliges every Man to receive the fame as neceffary to Salvation. Wherefore

fhall endeavor to fhew, that the Adoration of the Hoft is grofs Idolatry; and then it must be confefs'd, that the Popish Doctrin concerning the Adoration of the Hoft is forbidden in Scri-pture.

Now that the Adoration of the Hoftis Agrofs Idolatry, appears by this fhort and plain argument. It is grofs Idolatry to worship a mere Creature with the Higheft Worship, which is due to the Creator only. This truth is fo very clear, that

I fhall not endeavor to prove it... Now that those Perfons who adore the Hoft, do worship a mere Creature with the highest Worfhip, which is due to the Creator only, will be very manifeft, if we confider two things; 1. That the Hoft is a mere Creature #2. That the Adoration which is given to it, is the highest Worship, which is due to the Creator only with bobet Be

First, I fay, the Hoft is a mere Creature; and this is the neceffary confequence of the foregoing Chapter. For if the Elements after the Confecration are not chang'd into the fubftance of Chrift's Body and Bloud, but retain their former Nature, and continue to be Bread and Wine; then it cannot be faid, that the Hoft, which is one of thofe Elements, viz. the Bread, is any thing more than a mere Creature! 5 mi

Secondly therefore, I am to prove that the Adoration which is given to it is the highest Worship, which is due to the Creator only. Our Adverfaries do diftinguish thus between Dulia and Latria. They fay that Dulia is an inferior kind of Worfhip, which they think is due even to Angels and Saints: but Latria, they tell us, is the highest Wor-fhip that a Creature can pay, and therefore they Lallow it to none but the Great God of Heaven. I fhall not examin this diftinction, because it is not neceffary to my prefent purpofe; let it fuffice therefore to obferve, that Latria is (by their own confeffion) the highest Worship that can be paid by us, and due to none but the Supreme God and Maker of all things. Now this Worship of Latria they give to the Hoft in the Adoration of it; as appears not only by that Canon of the Council of Trent, which I have already recited; but alfo by thefe words, which fhe speaks

fpeaks in (b) another place; viz. Therefore it is not to be doubted, but that all faithful Chriftians, according to that custom which has been ever receiv'd in the Catholic Church, do give the worship of Latria, which is due to the true God, unto this most Wherefore boly Sacrament in their Veneration of it.

it appears, that the adoration given to the Hoft is the highest Worship, which is due to the Creator only. 50

Befides, the reafon for which they adore the Hoft, is their opinion of Chrift's Divinity and Humanity being prefent in it. They fancy that their Savior, who is very God, is as certainly prefent under the fpecies of Bread and Wine, as he is in the higheft Heaven and therefore they think they are obliged to adore him thus prefent upon Earth, with the fame Worship that is due to him as fitting at the Right hand of God. For, as the Council of (c) Trent fpeaks, the Sacrament is not to be ador'd ever the lefs, for Chrift's having appointed it to be taken for we believe that fame God to be prefent in it, whom when the eternal Father bringeth into the World, be faies, and let all the Angels of God worship him, &c. Now fince I have prov'd, that their notion of Tranfubftantia. tion is falfe, and that the accidents of Bread and

(b) Nullus itaque dubitandi locus relinquitur, quin omnes Chrifti fideles, pro more in Catholica Ecclefia femper recepto, Latria cultum qui vero Deo debetur, huic Sanctiffimo Sacramento in veneratione exhibeant. Concil. Trident. Seff. 13. cap.5. de Eucharift.

c) Neque enim ideo minus eft adorandum, quod fuerit à Chrifto Domino ut fumatur inftitutum; nam illum eundem Deum præfentem in eo adeffe credimus, quem Pater æternus introducens in orbem terrarum, dicit, Et adorent eum omnes, angeli Dei. Concil Trident. ibid.

Wine do cover the real fubftances of Bread and Wine, and not the Divinity and Humanity united in the Perfon of Chrift; therefore it is plain, that those Men who do worship the fpecies of Bread and Wine, with the fame Worship which is due to none but Chrift our very God; do worship a Creature with the fame Worship which is due to none but Chrift our very God. Now 'tis Notorious

that the Papifts do, in the Adoration of the Hoft, thus worship that which is really nothing more than bare Bread; and therefore it muft of neceffity follow, that the Adoration which is given to the Hoft, is the highest Worfhip, which is due to the Creator only.

Since then the Hoft is a mère Creature, and fince the Adoration which is given to it is the highest WorShip, which is due to the Creator only; 'tis certain that the Adoration of the Hoft is grofs Idolatry. And fince the Adoration of the Hot is grofs Idolatry, 'cis certainly condemn'd by the Word of God; and confequently, the Popish Doctrin concerning the Lawfulness and Neceffity of it is alfo forbidden therein. And therefore, fince I have fhewn, 1. That the Church of Rome do's impofe this Doerin of the Adoration of the Hoft as neceffary to Salvation; and 2. That this Doctrin is forbidden in Scripture; 'tis too plain, that the Church of Rome impofes fomething as neceffary to Salvation, which is forbidden in the Word of God.

we think forbidden in the Word of God, is the, Doctrin of Communion in one kind. dy dhe boy emis andr It cannot be deny'd, that the Church of Rome teaches this Doctrin, and impofes it as neceffary to Salvation, becaufe the 18th Article of the Po pish Creed runs thus, I do alfo profefs, that whole and Intire Chrift, and a true Sacrament, is receiv'd under one kind only. Now that this Doctrin of Half-Communion is forbidden in the Scriptures, will plainly appear from the words of the Inftitu tion of the Lord's Supper. hoitambh chi som! We are (a) told, that our Lord, took Bread, that he blefs'd, brake and gave it to his Difciples, faying, Take eat, &c. and that he took, biefs'd and deliver'd the Cup, faying, Drink ye all of this, &c, and that he faid unto them all, Do this in remembrance of me. From whence tis plain, that the bleffed fe deliver'd both kinds to the A poftles; and tis granted by our Adverfaries, that thefe words do oblige, us as well as the Apostles, to receive the confecrated Bread in remembrance of our Savior: and therefore we are obliged to receive the Cup, as the Apoftles did; fince we are commanded to Receive the Cup, as much as to Receive the Bread.
