sterling. Then there comes that fruitful source of expenditure which has been so freely lavished upon the railways of the world. What this amounts to we hardly know, as we have already said; but we know, from our own Board of Trade Returns, that in Great Britain alone, between the

years 1862 and 1872, we spent upon our own home railways no less than £175,000,000 sterling; that in the same period we spent upon our Indian railways £50,000,000; that in the same interval more than half the existing joint-stock companies were brought into existence; that there has been an immense addition to our old joint-stock bank capital and other classes of enterprise; and let us now put these figures together, and endeavour to arrive at some approximate estimate of the progress of debt and investment during the short period of ten years.

The voluminous statistics furnished in the four following pages indicate clearly, among other information, what dimensions the existing colonial and foreign national indebtedness have now attained.
