sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatever I speak therefore, even as the Father said to me, so I speak.

O GOD, thou art our life and our health. We bless thee for the renewal of our powers which the night's repose and the morning's freshness bring to us. Creator of our spirits, thou art also the Renewer, and day by day we bless thee for thy renovating grace.

Day by day we need more of thy bounties than we can number, and yet above all others there is one thing that is needful. Give us wisdom and fervor to ask for it as we ought, even for a double portion of thy Spirit; more of thy light in our understandings; more of thy love in our hearts; more of thy strength in our wills. Unite our frail being to thy infinite love through the life of faith and obedience. Graciously open within our hearts the gate of heaven, and may we in all that we suffer, or do, or enjoy, live as subjects of the divine kingdom.

Thanks be to thee, O God, that in Jesus our Redeemer we may behold with joy unspeakable the glory of the only-begotten of the Father, and rejoice in thy grace and truth by him brought near. Lord, we believe; help thou our unbelief. We would look to him, and lean on him, who came as a light into the world, that we should not abide in darkness. By fidelity amid the trials and temptations of the world,

as well as by the study of thy word, and prayer at thy mercy-seat, may we strive to go forward in the right path, and enter into life eternal.

Father in heaven, graciously aid us by thy Spirit. Keep our eyes from tears, our feet from falling, and our souls from death. Comfort thy people everywhere with thy love, and renew them by thy grace. Give new power to thy church and word, and let all the people praise thy holy name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For a Christian Life.

Let brotherly love continue.

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God; whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation;

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to-day, and for

ever.

For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to

come.

By him, therefore, let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name.

O God, our Sovereign and Father, it is our joy with every morning's waking to renew the sense of thy presence and the consciousness of thy care. The thought of thee precedes all other thoughts, the love of thee all other affections.

We bless thee, O Lord, that in the wants and capacities of our nature, and by the Gospel of thy Son, thou hast called us to honor, and glory, and immortality. We rejoice in our solemn responsibilities, and accept our duties as the highest proof of thy favor. Suffer not heart and flesh to fail in the glorious service we owe thee. The spirit, O God, is willing, but the flesh is weak. We implore thy divine grace to defend us this day from the dominion of our appetites, the illusions of the world, and the deceitfulness of our own hearts. We have proved the power of temptation, and are afraid of ourselves. Our strength is weakness, our pride is dust. But thou, O Lord, art almighty, and canst make us willing in the day of thy power, and give us the victory in the hour of our conflict.

Clothe us, this day, with all social and domestic graces. Help us to discharge our debt to the world, in the serviceableness of our lives, the benevolence of our sentiments, the gentleness of our manners; and

especially uphold us in the exercise of forbearance, tenderness and fidelity, towards those of our own household.

Daily we desire to supplicate thy mercy and protection in behalf of the poor and neglected, the injured and lost. Suffer not our eyes to become used to the sight of injustice, or our ears dull to the cry of misery. May no day pass without thy blessing on some effort we have made for the redemption of our suffering race.

Almighty Judge, as every day brings us nearer to thy bar, may it bring us closer to the requirements of thy Gospel. Rebuke whatever levity, indifference or wilfulness, thou seest in our hearts. May the youngest of us take at once the path to heaven, and the oldest fail not diligently to keep it.

Gracious God, our prayer is before thee. Despise not our offering now, and turn us not away when we seek thine acceptance in the last day. And thine be the kingdom, the power and the glory,

through Jesus

Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Social Duties.

Put on, therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering;

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man hath a quarrel against any even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

And whatever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

O LORD, our God, thou art good and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy to all them that call upon thee. All thy works and providences speak to us of thee. Our whole lives, from the cradle to this hour, bear witness to thy paternal care and love for us. Our own hearts prompt us to call upon thee. Thy holy Son by his precept and example has enjoined us to draw nigh unto thee in prayer. Through the new and living way consecrated by him we would now approach thee as true worshippers, seeking to worship thee in spirit and in truth.

Guardian and preserver of our lives through the silent night, when there was no eye to watch over us, and no arm to protect us, thou hast preserved us from the pestilence that walketh in darkness, from the assaults of violence, from the flames that might have consumed us and our dwellings. By thy mighty
