The subscription to the Eco di Savonarola is 3s. per half year, and not per quarter as there stated. The price of this Periodical to ordinary purchasers is SIX PENCE per number; but persons anxious to distribute it gratuitously, as a tract, will be supplied at a much lower rate, on application to Sig. Salvatore Ferretti. The Editor of the Eco di Savonarola respectfully requests those of his friends who are anxious to assist him in this arduous undertaking, to endeavour to obtain regular subscribers of twelve shillings per year, and upwards, towards the fund for its support. The names of subscribers thus obtained should be sent to Sig. S. F., 35, Church Road, Kingsland, London. The Eco di Savonarola is now well known in England, Italy, and elsewhere. During the nine years of its existence, it has been much blessed of the Lord, as the means of diffusing light amidst the darkness of Popery; and has been the instrument of the conversion of many souls to Christ, the one sole and great aim of this evangelical magazine. Its design will be, as heretofore, to combat, by means of the word of God, the errors of Popery and Infidelity, with the view of winning souls to Christ. To avoid all misapprehension, it may be well here to explain the nature of the sentiments actuating those who propose to conduct the journal. 1. All mankind, without exception, are sinners before God. Rom. iii, 23. 2. The wages of sin is death. Rom. vi, 23. 3. We can, by no efforts of our own, free ourselves from the condemnation under which we lie Rom. viii, 7. 4. But God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but should have everlasting life. John iii, 16. 5. He that believeth on him is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already. John iii, 18. 6. Jesus Christ is the one sole mediator between God and man. 1 Tim. ii, 5. 7. By grace we are saved, through faith, and not by the works of the law. Eph. ii, 8. 8. The works of the law, however good in themselves, (Rom. vii, 12,) can never merit eternal salvation; (Gal. ii, 16;) yet good works are indispensably necessary to the Christian, inasmuch as they are a proof of his faith, the consequence and manifestation of the hope that is in him. Jam. ii, 14—26. We give this epitome of our professed belief, because, in these times, many are ready to abuse the word Gospel, Jesus Christ, Faith, and so on, in order to throw dust into the eyes of the simple, employing the Christian religion as a means, instead of an end. For those who speak of the Gospel, is it always the good news of pardon and reconciliation announced to the perishing sinner? Is Jesus Christ to them the Son of God made flesh, very God, and very man? Warmly as we love the land of our birth, and ardently as we desire her freedom, yet, as Christians, our policy is never to interfere with politics, but to leave the dead to bury their dead. (Matt. viii, 22.) If the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John viii, 26.) Nor will our Magazine ever become the combatant for or against any religious party, but it will be our desire to cherish fraternal regard for all who love the Lord Jesus Christ, in sincerity, whatever may be the particular denomination to which they belong, either in Italy, or elsewhere. As the proceeds of this work, expences deducted, will be chiefly devoted to the maintenance of the EVANGELICAL SCHOOL for ITALIAN GIRLS, founded and directed by SIGNOR SALVATORE FERRETTI, those who subscribe to the Eco di Savonarola will benefit an establishment which has for its aim the intellectual and Christian education of the Italian female sex. This Periodical was commenced in the year 1847, to assist in promoting the spiritual welfare of Italians, and was printed in the Italian language alone. For nine years it more than realized, in this respect, the expectations of its projectors, and latterly, with a view to increase its usefulness, it has been determined to issue it with an English translation in parallel columns. Published in a tongue not very familiar to the English, a stranger to any party-spirit, standing apart from political sentiments, of an independent character, and with one only aim in view, that of winning souls to Christ, it was truly natural that this little journal should aspire but to a very limited number of subscribers. Consequently, on taking the work in hand, we sought for no more than the means for supplying the cost of printing, arrangement, &c., delighted beyond measure at being able to employ our time gratuitously, as regarded the editing, correspondence and other things necessary to the undertaking. But the subscribers have never been sufficiently numerous to cover the expenses. |
