all mysteries, &c. I have all faith, &c. and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing, &c. Charity never faileth, &c. Now abideth faith, hope, charity: but the greatest of these is charity.-1 Cor. xiii. 1-3. 8. 13.

If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema, Maranatha-1 Cor. xvi. 22.

Whether we be besides ourselves, it is to God, &c. for the love of Christ constraineth us.-2 Cor. v. 13, 14.. Circumcision availeth nothing, &c. but faith, which worketh by love, &c. the fruit of the Spirit is love. Gal. v. 6. 22.

The Lord direct your hearts unto the love of God.-2 Thess. iii. 5.

Hearing of thy love, &c. which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, &c.-Philem. 5.

God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and labour of love, which ye have shewed towards his name.Heb. vi. 10.

Jesus Christ, whom having not seen, ye love.-1 Pet. i. 7, 8.

God is love and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear, &c. He that feareth, is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother, whom he hath seen; how can he love God, whom he hath not seen?— 1 John iv. 16. 18-20.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, &c.-1 John v. 2.

I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, &c.-Rev. ii. 4, 5.

SECT. III. As Fruits of Love to God and Christ: 1. To delight themselves in him, long for, and pant after him: make their boast of, and glory and rejoice in God and Christ, as their Portion and Rest: and, 2. To obey, and hearken to him.

I. To delight in, long for, pant after, make their boast of, glory and rejoice in God and Christ, as their Portion and Rest.

I WILL not go up in the midst of thee, &c. When the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned, and, &c. My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he said unto him, If thy presence go not, carry us not up hence.-Exod. xxxiii. 3, 4. 14, 15.

Their rock is not as our rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. Deut. xxxii. 31.

I rejoice in thy salvation: there is none holy as the Lord, for there is none besides thee: neither is there any rock like our God, &c.-1 Sam. ii. 1, 2.

All the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.-1 Sam. vii. 2.

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; the God of my rock, &c. my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, and my saviour. Who is God, save the Lord? And who is a rock, save our God?-2 Sam. xxii. 2, 3. 32. Ps. lxxi. 3.

When he giveth quietness, who can make trouble? And when he hideth his face, who can behold him ? &c.— Job xxxiv. 29.

Thou, O Lord, art a shield for (or about) me; my glory, and the lifter up of my head.-Ps. iii. 3.

There be many who say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.-Ps. iv. 6,7. I will be glad, and rejoice in thee:

I will sing praise to thy name, &c.Ps. ix. 2.

Why standest thou afar off, O Lord? Why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?-Ps.x. 1. lxxxviii. 14. How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? How long wilt thou hide thy face from me?-Ps. xiii. 1. lxxiv. 9, 10.

The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup; thou maintainest my lot; the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage, &c. In thy presence is fulness of joy: at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.-Ps. xvi. 5, 6. 11.

O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.-Ps. xix. 14.

We will rejoice in thy salvation: and in the name of our God we will set up our banners.-Ps. xx. 5.

The king shall joy in thy strength, O Lord and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice?-Ps. xxi. 1. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me? &c. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, &c. Be not thou far from me, O Lord, O my strength, &c.-Ps. xxii. 1. 11. 19. lxxxviii. 14, 15.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, &c. Thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.-Ps. xxiii. 1. 4.

The Lord is my light, and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple, &c. My heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.-Ps. xxvii. 1. 4. 8.9.

Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of

his, &c. in his favour is life, &c. Lord, by thy favour, thou hast made my mountain to stand strong thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.→ Ps. xxx. 4, 5. 7.

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt encompass me about with songs of deliverance, &c. Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous; and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.-Ps. xxxii. 7. 11.

Our soul waiteth for the Lord; he is our help, and our shield; for our heart shall rejoice in him.-Ps. xxxiii. 20, 21. xciv. 17.

My soul shall make her boast in the Lord, &c. O magnify the Lord with me: let us exalt his name together, &c. O taste and see that the Lord is good.-Ps. xxxiv. 2, 3. 8.

How excellent (or precious) is thy loving-kindness, O God, &c. For with thee is the fountain of life; in thy light shall we see light.-Ps. xxxvi. 7. 9.

Delight thyself also in the Lord, &c.-Ps. xxxvii. 4.

Surely every man walketh in a vain shew, &c. And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.-Ps. xxxix. 6, 7.

As the hart panteth after the waterbrooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? my tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me; for I had gone with the multitude, &c. to the house of God, &c. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? &c. Hope thou in God, &c.Ps. xlii. 1—5. 11.

Thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? Then will I go, &c. unto God my exceeding joy (or the gladness of my joy).Ps. xliii. 2. 4.

In God we boast all the day long.

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, &c. to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary; because thy loving-kindness is better than life, &c. My soul followeth hard after thee.-Ps. Ixiii. 1—3. 8.

Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.-Ps. lxv. 4.

He that is our God is the God of salvation and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death, &c. Ps. Ixviii. 20.

Whom have I in heaven, but thee? and there is none upon earth whom I desire besides thee. My flesh and my heart faileth; but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever, &c. It is good for me to draw near to God.-Ps. lxxiii. 25, 26.28. Who is so great a God as our God? -Ps. lxxvii. 13.

Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.-Ps. lxxx. 3. 7. 19.

How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house, &c. Behold, O God our shield, &c. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a door keeper in the house of my God, than

to dwell in the tents of wickedness: for the Lord God is a sun, and a shield, &c.-Ps. lxxxiv. 1, 2. 4. 9-11. xxvi. 8. cxxii. 1.

Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance; in thy name shall they rejoice all the day, &c. For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted. The Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king, &c. How long, O Lord, wilt thou hide thy face, for ever?-Ps. lxxxix. 15-18. 46.

In the multitude of my thoughts within me, thy comforts delight my soul.-Ps. xciv. 19. 22.

Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous.
Ps. xcvii. 12.

My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the Lord.Ps. civ. 34.

He satisfieth the longing soul: and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. Ps. cvii. 9. Prov. xxvii. 7.

The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is like unto the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high? Who, &c. Ps. cxiii. 4, 5.

Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? But our God is in the heavens; he hath done whatsoever he pleased.-Ps. cxv. 2, 3. lxxiv. 9, 10.

Return unto thy rest, O my soul ! for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.-Ps. cxvi. 7.

Thou art my portion, O Lord, &c. I intreated thy favour (or face) with my whole heart, &c. Make thy face to shine upon thy servant, &c.-Ps. cxix. 57, 58. 135.

My soul waiteth for the Lord, : than they that watch for the morning. -Ps. cxxx. 6.

I know that the Lord is great ; and that our Lord is above all gods. Ps. cxxxv. 5.

Thou art my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.-Ps. cxlii. 5. My soul thirsteth after thee, as a

thirsty land, &c. Hide not thy face from me.-Ps. cxliii. 6, 7.

The Lord my strength (or rock), &c. my goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, &c. Happy is that people whose God is the Lord.-Ps. cxliv. 1, 2. 15. cxlvi. 5.

Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is excellent (or exalted) his glory is above the earth and the heaven.-Ps. cxlviii. 13. As the apple tree is among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved, &c. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.-Cant. ii. 3.

By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: but found him not I will rise now and go about the city, &c. I found him, I held him, and would not let him go, &c.-Cant. iii. 1, 2. 4.

I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, &c. I am sick of love, &c. My beloved is white, &c. This is my beloved.-Cant. v. 6. 8. 10. 16. viii. 6, 7.

In the way of thy judgments have we waited for thee: the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. With my soul have I desired thee in the night yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early.-Isa. xxiv. 8, 9.

In that day shall the Lord of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people.-Isa. xxviii. 5.

The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our law-giver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.-Isa. xxxiii. 22.

As for our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.-Isa. xlvii. 4.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall be joyful in my God. Isa. Ixi. 10.

Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that

which doth not profit. My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and have hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, &c. Have I been a barren wilderness unto Israel? &c. Can a maid forget her ornaments? a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. Jer. ii. 11. 13. 31, 32.

Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom; neither let the mighty man glory in his might, &c. But let him who glorieth, glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, &c.-Jer. ix. 23, 24. 2 Cor. x. 17. 1 Cor. i. 29. 31.

The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things, &c. The Lord of hosts is his name.-Jer. x. 16. li. 19.

O the hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof in time of trouble! why shouldst thou be as a stranger in the land? and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside, to tarry for a night ? Why shouldst thou be as a man astonished? &c. Yet thou, O Lord, art in the midst of us and we are called by thy name, &c.—Jer. xiv. 8, 9. xvii. 13.

The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.Lam. iii. 24.

Woe also to them when I depart from them.-Hosea ix. 12.

Fear not, O land; be glad, and rejoice; for the Lord will do great things. Be glad then, ye children of Zion; and rejoice in the Lord your God.-Joel ii. 21. 23.

But the Lord will be the hope (or harbour) of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.-Joel iii. 16.

Arise ye and depart; for this is not your rest, because it is polluted.— Micah ii. 10.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vine, &c. yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my sal

vation. The Lord God is my strength, &c. Hab. iii. 17—19.

Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.-Luke i. 46, 47. Rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.-Luke x. 20. Zacchaeus came down, and received Christ joyfully.-Luke xix. 5, 6.

Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life, &c. Thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.-John vi. 68, 69.

Philip saith unto him, Shew us the Father, and it sufficeth ns.-John xiv. 8.

These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.— John xv. 11.

Peter said, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee.-John xxi. 17.

The Eunuch went on his way rejoicing. Acts viii. 38, 39.

The gaoler rejoiced, believing in God.-Acts xvi. 34.

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace, wherein we stand; and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, &c. We also joy in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ. -Rom. v. 2. 11.

Rejoicing in hope.-Rom, xii. 12. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.-Rom.

xv. 13.

Our consolation also aboundeth by Jesus Christ.-2 Cor. i. 5.

Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, -2 Cor. ii. 14.

God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. -Gal. vi. 14.

My brethren, rejoice in the Lord, &c. We are the circumcision, &c. who rejoice in Christ, &c. I count all things but loss, for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.-Phil. iii. 1. 3. 8.

Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, rejoice. And the peace of God, which passeth all understand

ing, shall keep your hearts and minds, &c.-Phil. iv. 4. 7.

Rejoice evermore.-1 Thess. v. 16. That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation; who have fled for refuge, to lay hold upon the hope set before us. -Heb. vi. 18.

In whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable, and full of glory.-1 Pet.

i. 8. 1 John i. 4.

I will give unto him who is athirst, of the fountain, &c.-Rev. xxi. 6. Secondly, To obey and hearken to the Laws and Word of God, in Christ.

THERE is one law-giver, who is able to save, and to destroy.-James iv. 12.

Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee, &c. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him.-Gen. xii. 1. 4, 5. Heb. xi. 8.

So in putting away Ishmael and Hagar.-Ĝen. xxi. 11—14.

God said unto Abraham, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest; and offer him there for a burnt-offering, &c. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took Isaac, &c. He stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son, &c. In blessing, I will bless thee, &c. because thou hast obeyed my voice.-Gen. xxii. 1-3. 10. 17, 18.

In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed: because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.-Gen. xxvi. 4, 5.

God bid Moses go; and said, he would be with his mouth, &c. He refused: God was angry.-Exod. iv. 13, 14.

Thus did all the children of Israel: as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.-Exod. xii. 50.
