When the Spirit of truth is come, &c. he shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things which the Father hath, are mine, therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, &c. We are sure that thou camest forth from God, &c.-John xvi. 13-15. 28. 30. Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be the Lord both of the dead and living.-Rom. xiv. 9. There is one Lord Jesus, by whom are all things, and we by him. 1 Cor. viii. 6.

When he shall have put down all rule, and all authority and power; for he must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet.-1 Cor. xv. 24, 25.

He hath made him, &c. who knew

He raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power, and might, and dominion, and every name which is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come; and hath put all things under his feet, and given him to be head over all things to the church, &c. who filleth all in all.-Eph. i. 20-23.

The unsearchable riches of Christ, &c. God, who created all things by Jesus Christ, &c. of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. Eph. iii. 8, 9. 15.

He descended first into the lower parts of the earth: he who descended, is the same also who ascended up far above all heavens.-Eph. iv. 9, 10.

Jesus, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, &c. God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth: and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, &c.-Phil. ii. 5, 6. 9-11. John v. 17, 18. x. 33.

Jesus Christ, who shall, &c. according to the working, whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. Phil. iii. 20, 21.

Who is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of every creature. For by him were all things created that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible; whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him and for him, and he is before all things, and by him all things consist; and he is the head, &c. that in (or amongst) all things he might have the pre-eminence: for it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell.—Col. i. 15-19. 2 Cor. iv. 4. Heb. iii. 3, 4. 6.

Christ, for in him dwelleth all the fulness of the godhead, bodily, &c. The head of all principality and power, &e. Having spoiled principalities, &c. Col. ii. 8-10. 15.

God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, &c. received up, &c.-1 Tim. iii. 16. Jesus Christ, which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light, which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, &c. To whom be honour, &c.-1 Tim. vi. 14-16.

The doctrine of God our Saviour, &c.-Titus ii. 10. 13.

His Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. Who being the · brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power; when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: being made so much better than the angels, as he hath, &c. a more excellent name, &c. Unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son? &c. He saith, And let all the angels of God worship him, &c. Therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee, &c.-Heb. i. 2, &c. viii. 1. x. 12. xii. 2. Col. iii. 1.

We see Jesus, &c. crowned with glory and honour, &c.-Heb. ii. 9.

Having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God, &c. Such an High Priest became us; holy, &c. and made higher than the heavens.-Heb. vii. 3. 26.

Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.-Heb. xiii. 8.

Our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (or our Lord Jesus Christ of glory), &c. That worthy name, by which we are called.-James ii. 1. 7.

A living stone, &c. chosen of God, and precious, &c. who did no sin.1 Pet. ii. 4. 22.

The power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eye-witnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice unto him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.-2 Pet. i. 16, 17. 1 Pet. i. 21.

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; to him be glory both now, and for ever.-2 Pet. iii. 18. Jude 25.

In him is no sin, &c. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us.-1 John iii. 5. 16. I Pet. iii. 18.

His Son, Jesus Christ: this is the true God, and eternal life.-1 John v. 20.

Jesus Christ, &c. the Prince of the kings of the earth, &c. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord; which is, and which was, and which is to come; the Almighty, &c. I am the first, and the last: I am he who liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen ; and have the keys of hell and death. -Rev. i. 5, 6. 8. 11. 17, 18. ii. 8.

I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts.-Rev. ii. 23.

These things saith he that hath the seven spirits of God, &c. that is holy, &c. that hath the key of David; he that openeth, and no man shutteth, &c.-Rev. iii. 1. 7.

The lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, &c. Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open it, &c. Worthy is the Lamb which was slain, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing, &c. Blessing, and honour, and glory and power be

unto him who sitteth upon the throne,
and unto the Lamb for ever, &c. The

And the kings of the earth, and the great men, &c. said to the mountains, &c. Hide us from the face of him who sitteth upon the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand?-Rev. vi. 15-17.

The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever.-Rev. xi. 15.

The Lamb shall overcome them; for he is the Lord of lords and King of kings.-Rev. xvii. 14. xix. 16.

I am the root, &c. of David, and the bright and morning star.-Rev. xxii. 16.

FOURTHLY, In his Nature. He shall feed his flock, like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arms, and carry them in his bosom; and shall gently lead those that are with young (or give suck).-Isa. xl. 11.

He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking (or daily burning) flax shall he not quench.-Isa. xlii. 2, 3. Matt. xii. 18-20.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.-Isa. 1. 6. Matt. xxvi. 67.

He was oppressed, &c. he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth, &c. He had done no violence; neither was any deceit in his mouth.-Isa. liii. 7. 9. Mal. ii. 6.

Thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, &c. lowly, and riding upon an ass.-Zech. ix. 9.

arise, with healing in his wings.→ The Sun of righteousness shall Mal. iv. 2.

Jesus sat at meat, &c. many Publirisees said, Why eateth your master cans and sinners came, &c. The Pha with Publicans and sinners? &c. Jesus said unto them, They who are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. that meaneth, I will have mercy, and But go ye and learn what not sacrifice: for I am not come to pentance, &c. When he saw the mulcall the righteous, but sinners to retitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted abroad, as sheep having no shepherd, (or were tired), and were scattered &c. He healed their sick, &c. would Matt. ix. 10-13. 36. xiv. 14, 15. xv. not send them away fasting, &c. 32. xx. 34. John iv. 31, &c.

Learn of me, for I am meek, and lowly in heart.-Matt. xi. 29.

out, Lord, save me, &c. immediately When Peter was sinking, and cried Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, &c. Wherefore didst, &c.-Matt. xiv. 30,31.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou who would I have gathered thy children killest the prophets, &c. How often together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not?-Matt. xxiii. 37.

Christ excused his disciples when indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. they slept, &c. He said, The spirit Matt. xxvi. 41.

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, &c. he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, &c. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, Behold, how he loved him!-John xi. 33. 35, 36. Luke vii. 12-14.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, &c. Peace I leave with you: my peace I give unto you, &c. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.-John xiv. 1, 27. Matt. xiv. 27.

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now: howbeit, &c.-John xvi. 12, 13.

When Mary sought Jesus, weeping, he appeared to her, to comfort her, &c. He shewed himself also to his disciples, his hands and side; and the second time to Thomas, when he would not believe the report of the rest.-John xx. 11. 14-16. 19. 25.27.

Christ gave charge three times to Peter, that if he loved him, he should feed his lambs, and his sheep.-John xxi. 15-17.

Ye denied the holy One, and the just.-Acts iii. 14.

I obtained mercy, for this cause, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering, for a pattern to them who should hereafter believe on him.-1 Tim. i. 16.

In that he himself hath suffered, being tempted, he is able to succour them who are tempted.-Heb. ii. 18.

Who is holy, harmless, undefiled, &c.-Heb. vii. 26.

CHAP. VI.

How CHRIST wrought this Salvation for Sinners, and what he was made and is; what he undertook, and did, in order to do it.

SECT. 1. He is Mediator. THERE is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.-1 Tim. ii. 5.

By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.-Heb. vii. 22.

He is the Mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.-Heb. viii. 6.

And for this cause he is the Mediator of the new testament, that, &c. Heb. ix. 15.

And to Jesus, the Mediator of the new covenant (or testament).—Heb. xii. 24.

SECT. II. He took upon him the Nature of Man, a Body of Flesh, and humbled himself.

God said to the serpent, &c. I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.-Gen. iii, 14, 15.

Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call his name Immanuel.-Isa, vii. 14. ix. 6.

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots; and the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, &c. Isa. xi. 1, 2. Acts xiii. 22, 23.

His visage was so marred, more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men.-Isa. lii. 14.

He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him, He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, &c. We hid, as it were, our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Isa. liii. 2, 3.

The Lord hath created a new thing

The birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise, &c. Mary was found with child of the Holy Ghost, &c. She had brought forth her first-born Son, and he called his name Jesus.-Matt, i. 18. 20. 23. 25.

Thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and shalt call his name Jesus. That holy thing which shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God.-Luke i. 31. 35.

He was tempted of the devil.Matt. iv. 1-9.

And Jesus said unto them, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests: but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.Matt. viii. 20.

Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren James? &c. And they were offended in him.-Matt. xiii. 55-57. The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister. Matt. xx. 28.

He rode upon an ass into the city of Jerusalem.-Matt. xxi. 2. 4. 7. She brought forth her first-born Son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn, &c. He went down with them, &c. and was subject unto them: But his mother kept, &c.-Luke ii. 6,7.51.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.—John i. 14.

Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well.John iv. 6.

The bread that I will give, is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. John vi. 51.

The high priest prophesied that Jesus should die, &c. and gather the dispersed sons of God into one.-John xi. 49, &c.

David, &c. knowing that God had

sworn with an oath to him, that of flesh, he would raise up Christ, &c. the fruit of his loins, according to the Acts ii. 29, 30.
