It is understood, that the Private Trade is, making a rapid progress; especially in the Port of Liverpool; to which the number of ships returned laden from India in 1817, was double that of 186. It is likely to increase. Among the causes which contribute to render the trade of Liverpool flourishing, is the lowness of the expences, duties, &c. compared with those of London. Something like a conviction of this has at length forced itself on the consideration of the Mer chants of London, in respect to the Dues payable at the Docks. If report may be credited, the amount for East India Vessels, is three times what necessity would We justify: The enquiry is pending; have formerly stated the fact in clear terms, and we gather from circumstances, that our representations are about to be verified. London has certainly many advantages; but they may be more than counterbalanced by a weight of Costs, for which the Merchant can obtain no adequate compensation. They justify dependence, only up to a certain point. The price of Gold and Silver keeps up; and rather rises than falls of The prices Stocks decline, and are not likely to rise at present. The Course of Exchange is slowly becoming less favourable. But, these resources may mostly be traced to po litical causes; the consideration of which is not within the province of that series of papers to which the present is attached. AGRICULTURAL REPORT.
