titute, and altogether friendless in most cases, and exposed, for waut of such assistance, to the danger of being driven back to their former vicious courses. Such are the leading objects which the establishment of this charity was humanely intended to assist, but which cannot be accomplished without the benevolent contributions of those who would alleviate the miseries of ther fellow-creatures destined to suffer in a prison, and to undergo punishments to which the law has justly doomed them.

The Sheriffs have the satisfaction to add, that the state of the prison, in a moral sense, has been much improved by regulations which have been adopted for some time past, and they hope that improvements may yet be made in that respect as well as in religious instruction to the prisoners, to which the Sheriffs will always readily incline to give their support and assistance.

Donations will be thankfully received, addressed to the Sheriffs, under cover, by Mr. Brown, the keeper of Newgate; their under sheriffs, John Sudlow, esq., Albion-place, Blackfriars, and James Smith, esq., Austin-friars; and by the following bankers:-Sir Richard Carr Glyn, bart., Mills, Halifax, Glyn, and Co., Birchin-lane; and Messrs.. Rogers, Towgood, Rogers, Olding, and Boycott, Clement's-lane.

SPITALFIELDS BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

Patron, Thomas Fowell Buxton, esq. MP.

Vice-Patrons.

Joseph Butterworth, esq. MP.

William Hale, esq.
William Lewis, esq.

Samuel Hoare, jun. esq.

President, Rev. Josiah Pratt, BD.

In acknowledging the liberal donations and subscriptions already received, the committee beg to state, that though the winter has hitherto been marked by no peculiar inclemency, nor has the silk trade of Spitalfields materially fallen off, yet so prodigious is the number of poor who reside together in this quarter of the metropolis, that the most just and urgent claims are continually made on the sympathy of the benevolent.

Within these few weeks, two lying-in cases have occurred to this society, where, in one instance, the poor mother had scarcely an article of clothing for her new-born Infant, or bed-covering for herself, though suffering at the time under a severe cough: and in the other, the family were so destitute of food and fire, that a few coals, and a basin of warm tea were supplied by a compassionate neighbour in the utmost extremity.

To both these cases the visitors of this society have afforded such relief as they respectively needed.

The committee have also especially to acknowledge the receipt of a most valuable assortment of clothing, from the Rev. W. C. Wilson, vicar of Tunstal, chiefly made up by the girls attending his school of industry.

In ten years, this society has relieved 94,909 persons at an expense of 20,3447.
