"So much for the critical labors of Mr. Gaisford. At the same time we were surprised that he has only once attempted to restore the right reading by conjecture; viz. in Iv. 119. where for οὐ πεισόμεθα he proposes οὐκ ὑπησόμεθα. We regret his omissions in this department; as we are convinced that a man like Mr. G., distinguished for his learning and acuteness, could have either himself emended many passages in Herodotus which are evidently corrupt, or at least pointed out the way to others. This, however, not having been done, we venture to propose

the following corrections:V. 23. ἅτε δὲ τειχέοντος ἤδη ̔Ιστιαίου τοῦ Μιλησίου τὴν παρὰ Δαρείου αἰτήσας ἔτυχε μισθὸν δωρεὴν φυλακῆς τῆς σχεδίης. This passage we would read thus, ἅτε δὲ τειχέοντος ἤδη Ιστιαίου τοῦ Μιλησίου Μύρκινον, τὴν παρὰ Δαρείου αιτήσας ἔτυχε μισθὸν, δωρεὴν φυλακῆς τῆς σχεδίης. vi. 16. 3. οὔτε ἢν τὴν σὴν, σὲ δὲ ἐπιφοιτήσει, τοῦτο ἤδη μαθητέον ἐστί. We propose οὔτε ἢν τὴν σὴν, σὲ δὲ ἐπιφοιτήσει (Wess. divides the sentence thus) τοῦτο δὲ ἤδη μαθητέον ἔσται (ἔσται from several Mss.). In the preceding words εἰ δὲ ἐμὲ μὲν ἐν οὐδενὶ λόγῳ ποιήσεται, οὐδὲ ἀξιώσει ἐπιφανῆναι &c. for οὐδὲ we would write οὐ δέ. c. 140. κακοῖς δ ̓ ἐπικίδνατε θυμόν: perhaps κακοῖς δ ̓ ἐπικίρνατε θυμόν. c. 154. κῶς ἦν δορυφό ρος ̔Ιπποκράτεος for ὃς ἦν δορυφόρος Ιπποκράτεος.
