TO THE

CONGREGATION OF ST. JOHN'S CHURCH,

LEEDS.

WHEN, at the close of my long connection with you, I was presented with a very handsome and valuable memorial of your regard, I felt all that gratification which springs from the approbation of public men by public bodies, and which, in the relation of Minister and Congregation, is the highest testimony that can be borne to the human character.

The request that I would publish some of my Sermons, was an additional source of satisfaction; for, although I could not but be sensible that Sermons written in the ordinary discharge of clerical duties, and without any view to publication, were not very suitable for the press, yet such a request, and under such circumstances, was a strong and consolatory assurance that I had not laboured in vain.
