PREFACE. THIS Work is presented to the public, more especially to the denomination to which the author belongs, as the first attempt of a young and inexperienced writer. He saw that something of the kind was actually required among the youthful portion of society-that the works already before the public, of this description, were too voluminous, and were therefore read by few only, comparatively speaking. Hence, after waiting in vain for the appearance of a work of this description from an abler pen, he sat himself down to the task of compiling and sketching, in an humble manner, some of the leading and most important events in the history of the church, And his prayer is, that it may prove beneficial to his fellow youth. He asks their attention to this branch of history, for there is that pertaining to it which is worthy their serious considerationthat which will enkindle ardent desires in the soul, to extend abroad a knowledge of Christ and the gospel of peace. And upon the young, to a certain extent, the welfare and prosperity of the Savior's cause depends. They have a great work to perform; and much to stimulate them to action. A voice is heard from the moral wastes of the world-from the residences of vice-from the cells of iniquity-from the habitations of crime-from the halls of sensuality, |
