if I shall go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will take you to myself, that where I am, you also may be. And whither I go you know, and the way you know. Thomas saith to him: Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me. If you had known me, you would without doubt have known my Father also: and from henceforth you shall know him, and you have seen him. Philip saith to him: Lord, shew us the Father, and it is enough for us. Jesus saith to him: So long a time have I been with you and have you not known me? Philip, he that seeth me, seeth the Father also. How sayest thou, Shew us the Father? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself. But the Father who abideth in me, he doth the works. Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? Otherwise believe for the very works sake. Amen, amen I say to you, he that believeth in me, the works that I do, he also shall do, and greater than these shall he do. Because I go to the Father, and whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, that will I do.

The Invention of the Cross.*

The Collect.

O God, who, in the miraculous discovery of the holy cross, wast pleased to renew the wonders

This festival is appointed by the Church for the commemora sion of the miraculous discovery of the Cross, at Jerusalem, on which our Saviour was crucified, after it had lain concealed on Mount-Calvary for 300 years. See the life of St. Helena, in Butler's lives of the Saints, on the 2d of May.

of thy passion: grant, that by the ransom paid on that saving wood, we may find help for the obtaining of eternal life. Who liveth.

The Epistle. Phil. ii. 5. 11.

Brethren: Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus; who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross. For which cause God also hath exalted him, and hath given him a name which is above all names: that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of these that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father. Alleluia, Alleluia.

The Gospel. John ii 1. 15.

At that time: There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God: for no man can do these signs which thou dost, unless God be with him. Jesus answered, and said to him: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith to him: How can a man be born again when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born again? Jesus answered: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh, is flesh: and that which is born of the spirit, is spirit. Wonder not that I said to thee, you must be born again, The Spirit breatheth where he will and

thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not whence he cometh, nor whither he goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can these things be done? Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things? Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony. If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not: how will you believe if I shall speak to you heavenly things? And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the Serpent in the desart, so must the Son of Man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but may have everlasting life.

St. Barnabas's Day.

The Collect.

O God, who comfortest us by the merits and prayers of blessed Barnabas: grant, in thy mercy, that we, who by him petition for thy blessings, may obtain them by the gift of thy grace. Thro'.

For the Epistle. Acts xi. 21. 26. xiii. 1. 3.

In those days: A great number believing were converted to the Lord. And the tidings came to the ears of the Church that was at Jerusalem, touching these things: and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch. Who when he was come, and had seen the grace of God, rejoiced: and he exhorted them all with purpose of heart to continue in the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. And a great multitude was added to the Lord. And Barnabas went to Tarsus to seek Saul: whom when he had found, he brought to Antioch, and they conversed there

in the Church a whole year: and they taught a great multitude, so that at Antioch the disciples were first named CHRISTIANS. (Chap. xiii.) Now there were in the Church which was at Antioch, prophets and doctors, among whom was Barnabas, and Simon, who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manahem who was the foster-brother of Herod the Tetrarch, and Saul. And as they were ministering to the Lord, and fasting, the Holy Ghost said to them: Separate me Saul and Barnabas, for the work whereunto I have taken them. Then they fasting and praying, and imposing their hands upon them, sent them away.

The Gospel. Matt. x. 16. 22.

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples: Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and simple as doves. But beware of men. For they will deliver you up in councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues. And you shall be brought before governors, and before kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles: but when they shall deliver you up, take no thought how or what you are to speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what to speak. For it is not you that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you. The brother also sirall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the son: and the chil drenshall rise up against the parent, and shall put them to death. And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake: but he that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved.

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist.
The Collect.

O GOD, who hast honoured this day by the birth of blessed John the Baptist: grant that thy

people may rejoice in spirit, and guide them in the way of eternal salvation. Thro'.

For the Epistle. Isai. xliv. 1.7.

And he

GIVE ear, ye islands, and hearken ye people from afar. The Lord hath called me from the womb, from the bowels of my mother he hath been mindful of my name. And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword: in the shadow of his hand he hath protected me, and hath made me a chosen arrow in his quiver he hath hidden me. said to me: Thou art my servant in Israel, for in thee will I glory. And now saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant: Behold, I have given thee to be the light of the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation even to the farthest part of the earth. Kings shall see, and princes shall rise up and adore for the Lord's sake, and for the Holy One of Israel who hath chosen thee.

The Gospel. Luke i. 57. 68.-

ELIZABETH'S full time of being delivered was come, and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shewed his great mercy towards her, and they congratulated with her. And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the ehild, and they called him by his father's name Zachary. And his mother answering, said: Not so, but he shall be called John. And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by that name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him. called. And demanding a writing-table, he wrote, saying: John is his name. And they all wondered. And immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue was loosed, and he spoke blessing God. And fear came upon all their neighbours; and all these things were noised abroad over all the hill country of Ju
