INTRODUCTION.

THE Royal Psalmist, David, has left us many beautiful Psalms, which no author can surpass in devotion, and a full display of the power and glory of God as he beheld Him in the Old Testament times; but the New Testament Church has a more illustrious view of God through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, whose name certainly ought not to be omitted in spiritual Psalms and Hymns.

The praises of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ are the most delightful part either of public or private worship, and an employment which brings us nearer to the state of the blessed in heaven than any other part of

devotional exercises: it purifies the heart and exalts the mind, and is an everlasting source of delight to the truly pious Christian.

66

O let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord." Col. iii. 16. It is a good and a pleasant thing to bless and praise the Lord.

The following Version of the Psalms is published by the Author, in the hope that it may be useful to pious Christians, and prove acceptable and of some service as a help in private devotion.

The heart of every man by nature is full of pride and haughtiness, which nothing can subdue but the almighty power of God. O! "let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." Philip. ii. 3. Humility is an excellent endowment. O! may we all possess this humility of spirit, and follow the pattern of our meek and lowly Jesus. If you wish to be truly happy,

seek all in Christ, the sure foundation of everlasting joys.

That this Book of Psalmody may be found of service in devotional retirement by those into whose hands it may come is the sincere wish of the Author.
