EDITIO PRINCEPS.-This is a magnificent specimen both of ancient printing and of ancient engraving. "If Koburger," says Dr. Dibdin, "had printed only this Chronicle, he would have done enough to place his name among the most distinguished of his typographical brethren." It has always been styled, by way of distinction, the Nuremberg Chronicle, and scarcely any volume has been so celebrated for a long series of years. The engravings, which are upwards of 2,200 in number, are in wood, and were executed by Michael Wolgemut and Pleydenwurf, the former of whom was the master of Albert Dürer; the subjects are Portraits of Illustrious Characters, Views of Towns, &c., &c. In the Bibliotheca Spenceriana it is minutely described, and fac-similes of the cuts are given; Dr. Dibdin has appropriated no less than twenty-six pages to this article alone. Bloemaert visited Paris, where he gained great distinction by engraving the above plates. The art of Engraving was very much improved, not only by the beauty of his execution, but chiefly by effecting an insensible gradation from his lights to his shadows, and introducing a variety of delicate tints in the distances of his subjects. Before his time, there was a great neglect of harmony. He may be said to have been the founder of that admirable style which has been so successfully followed by Audran and others. Brazier, Charles Nodier, Jules Janin, Leon Gozlan, Michel Masson, Philarète Chasles, etc. With over 600 plates, many of them colored in facsimile of the originals. 2 vols., 4to., half red morocco. $84 00. Paris, 1838 Caricatures are frequently better history than the most laborious tomes of the chroniclers. In this work we have a caricature history of the ages from the 14th century down to our own times. Here we see the witty jests against the Papal system during the period of the Reformation; the sarcasms of the people of the Middle Ages against the nobility, and of the nobles against the people, and of both against the despotism of power, and vivid comic pictures levelled at Louis XV. The period anterior to the French Revolution, the Revolution itself, the Consulate, and the Empire, all have their witty sides portrayed in this work, from the pencils of such French artists as Watteau, Coypel, Gillot, Fragonard, Huet, Desrais, Denon, Boilly, Isabey, Carle, and Horace Ver net. |
