149 "Suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind."

If WHEN God of old came down from ff The trump, that angels quake to hear,

heaven,

In power and wrath He came ;
Before His feet the clouds were riven,
Half darkness and half flame.

2 But when He came the second time,
He came in power and love;
Softer than gale at morning prime
Hovered His holy Dove.

3 ƒ The fires, that rushed on Sinai down
In sudden torrents dread,

Now gently light, (cres) a glorious crown,
On every sainted head.

4 ƒ And as on Israel's awe-struck ear
The voice exceeding loud,

PARACLETE.

Thrilled from the deep, dark cloud;

5 mf So, when the Spirit of our God Came down His flock to find,

cres A voice from heaven was heard abroad, A rushing, mighty wind.

6 f It fills the Church of God; it fills The sinful world around;

p Only in stubborn hearts and wills No place for it is found.

7 mf Come, Lord! come, Wisdom, Love, and Power!

Open our ears to hear;

cres Let us not miss the accepted hour ; f Save, Lord, by love or fear. Amen.

"The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name.

I mf COME to our poor nature's night
With Thy blessed inward light,

p Comforter Divine !

p Comforter Divine !

3 mf Like the dew, Thy peace distil;

p Comforter Divine!

4

Gentle, awful, holy Guest,

Make Thy temple in each breast;

There Thy presence be confessed,
Comforter Divine !

5 In us, for us, intercede,
And with voiceless groanings plead

Comforter Divine !

6 mf In us "Abba, Father!" cry;
cres Earnest of our bliss on high,

152 "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.”

Imf AS, when the Hebrew prophet raised

The brazen serpent high,

[cured,

That all the faithful might enjoy

Eternal life above.

The wounded looked and straight were 4 mf Not to condemn the sons of men

The people ceased to die,

2 mf So from the Saviour on the cross

A healing virtue flows;

Who looks to Him with lively faith
Is saved from endless woes.

3 f For God gave up His Son to death,
So generous was His love,

REQUIEM.

The Son of God appeared;
No weapons in His hand are seen,
Nor voice of terror heard:

5 mf He came to raise our fallen state,
And our lost hopes restore;

cres Faith leads us to the mercy-seat,
f And bids us fear no more.

ip ART thou weary, art thou languid, Art thou sore distrest?

cres" Come to Me," saith One, "and coming, Be at rest!"

2 mf Hath He marks to lead me to Him,

5 mf If I still hold closely to Him,

"Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

I mf" COME unto Me, ye weary,

And I will give you rest."
Oh, blessed voice of Jesus,

cres Which comes to hearts opprest! mf It tells of benediction,

Of pardon, grace, and peace, f Of joy that hath no ending,

Of love which cannot cease. 2 mf" Come unto Me, ye wanderers, And I will give you light." Oh, loving voice of Jesus,

cres Which comes to cheer the night! Our hearts were filled with sadness, And we had lost our way;

f But morning brings us gladness,

And songs, the break of day.

3 mf" Come unto Me, ye fainting,
And I will give you life."
Oh, cheering voice of Jesus,
cres Which comes to aid our strife!
mf The foe is stern and eager,

The fight is fierce and long;
f But Thou hast made us mighty,
And stronger than the strong.
4 mf" And whosoever cometh,
I will not cast him out."
Oh, welcome voice of Jesus,
cres Which drives away our doubt!
mf Which calls us, very sinners,
Unworthy though we be

cres Of love so free and boundless,
rall To come, dear Lord, to Thee!
Amen.

NOTE.-It is suggested that the first two lines of each verse should be sung by Tenors and Basses only; but, if necessary

they may be sung in Octaves by all the Voices.
