311

"Return unto thy rest, O my soul."

I BE still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently thy cross of grief and pain;

cres Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.

Be still, my soul: (cres) thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2 Be still, my soul: (cres) thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.

mf Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake;

All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul: (cres) the waves and winds shall know

His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

3 Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,

cres Then thou shalt better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: (cres) thy Jesus can repay
From His own fulness all He takes away.

4 Be still, my soul: (cres) the hour is hastening on
When we shall be for ever with the Lord;

When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.

Be still, my soul: (cres) when change and tears are past,

f All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last. Amen.

312 "Deal with Thy servant according unto Thy mercy, and teach me Thy statutes."

ImfFATHER, I know that all my life

Is portioned out for me;

And the changes that are sure to come
I do not fear to see;

cres But I ask Thee for a present mind,
Intent on pleasing Thee.

2 mfI ask Thee for a thoughtful love,

Through constant watching wise,
To meet the glad with joyful smiles,
dim And to wipe the weeping eyes;
And a heart at leisure from itself,
To soothe and sympathise.

3 mf I would not have the restless will
That hurries to and fro,
Seeking for some great thing to do,
Or secret thing to know;

dim I would be treated as a child,
And guided where I go.

4 mf Wherever in the world I am,
In whatsoe'er estate,

I have a fellowship with hearts
To keep and cultivate;

I mf JESUS, I my cross have taken,
All to leave, and follow Thee!
Destitute, despised, forsaken,
cres Thou from hence my all shalt be.
Perish every fond ambition,

cres Oh, 'tis not in grief to harm me,
While Thy love is left to me!
Oh, 'twere not in joy to charm me,
Were that joy unmixed with Thee!

All I've sought and hoped and known; 4 mf Take, my soul, thy full salvation;

mf Yet how rich is my condition !

God and heaven are still my own!

2 mf Let the world despise and leave me,

They have left my Saviour too; Human hearts and looks deceive me, mf Thou art not, like man, untrue; And, while Thou shalt smile upon me,

God of wisdom, love, and might, Foes may hate, and friends may shun me, f Show Thy face, and all is bright!

3 Man may trouble and distress me;

'Twill but drive me to Thy breast: Life with trials hard may press me; Heaven will bring me sweeter rest.

Rise o'er sin and fear and care;
Joy to find in every station

Something still to do or bear;
p Think what Spirit dwells within thee,
cres What a Father's smile is thine,
What a Saviour died to win thee!

Child of heaven, shouldst thou repine? 5 f Haste, then, on from grace to glory,

Armed by faith, and winged by prayer; Heaven's eternal day's before thee,

God's own hand shall guide thee there. Soon shall close thine earthly mission; Swift shall pass thy pilgrim days; cres Hope soon change to glad fruition, f Faith to sight, and prayer to praise. Amen.

"Then He arose, and rebuked the wind, and the raging of the water."
1 mf FIERCE raged the tempest o'er the deep, 3
Watch did Thine anxious servants keep,
But Thou wast wrapt in guileless sleep,
Calm and still.

2 mf "Save, Lord, we perish," was their cry,
res "Oh, save us in our agony!"
mf Thy word above the storm rose high,
'Peace, be still!"

mf The wild winds hushed; the angry deep
dim Sank, like a little child, to sleep;
mf The sullen billows ceased to leap,
At Thy will.

4 mf So, when our life is clouded o'er,
cres And storm-winds drift us from the shore,
Say, lest we sink to rise no more,

"Peace, be still!" Amen.
