5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies :

Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:

And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

NOTES ON PSALM XXIII.

Verse 1. By a most beautiful figure, the psalmist compares himself to a sheep, and Jehovah to a provident shepherd.

Verse 2. The figure is continued: God does all which a kind shepherd is accustomed to do.

Verses 3 and 4. The psalmist deserts the figure in the third verse, but returns to it again in the fourth.

Verse 5. By a new figure, the psalmist represents Jehovah under the image of a generous host, that provides richly for his guests.-The use of fragrant oils for anointing the head is an accompaniment of rich feasts in eastern countries.

Verse 6. The psalmist expresses his confidence in the continued goodness of God, and his hope of worshiping God without interruption.

Inference from the whole psalm: God's goodness is worthy of gratitude.

And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors;
And the King of glory shall come in.

Even lift them up, ye everlasting doors;
And the King of glory shall come in.

10. Who is this king of glory?

The Lord of hosts,

He is the King of glory.

NOTES ON PSALM XXIV.

Verses 1 and 2. Sentiment: the God of Israel is sovereign of the whole earth by the right of creation.-The se

cond verse appears to refer to the formation of the dry land, as described in Gen. I.

Verse 3. The purport of the inquiry here is: Who can worship such a God acceptably?-The hill of the LORD is mount Zion, where God was worshiped.

Verses 4, 5, and 6. These verses contain the answer to the inquiry in the preceding verse, and describe the character of an acceptable worshiper.-To lift up one's soul in the fourth verse means to swear.-Vanity in the same verse means falsehood.-Righteousness in the fifth verse means favor or kindness.-The God of one's salvation in the same verse, by a peculiarity of the Hebrew language, means one's preserving God.-Thy face, i. e. God's face. -O Jacob, more correctly in Jacob, i. e. among the Israelites.

Verse 7. By a bold and beautiful personification, the psalmist calls upon the ancient and venerable portals of the sanctuary, to prepare for the admission of the sacred ark and of the glorious king that sits enthroned upon it.

Verse 8. The portals respond, as it were, and ask, Who is this king of glory?

Verses 9 and 10. These verses contain a beautiful repetition of the two preceding verses slightly altered, for the sake of force and emphasis.-The hosts of God are angels and stars.

Inference from the whole psalm: every thing connected with God and his worship is most holy and sublime.
