heen now reading about the sin of disobedi. ence with some thought and attention : and if you have been such naughty wicked chil. dren as to be disobedient to your dear parents, may you now hegin to be very sorry, and go by yourself into some private place where nobody can see you, and pray to God to give you a new heart, that you may be able to obey and honour your kind father and mother. Pray to Jesus Christ, (he loves to hear little children pray,) and say; O Lord Jesus, hear a poor little sinful child; put thy love and fear into my heart, then I shall honour and obey my parents. Make me afraid to offend thee; then I shall be afraid to offend them. Dear Lord Jesus, hear a little child, for thy mercies' sake. Amen. - If you pray to the Lord Jesus, he will hear you, and pardon you, and give you his grace to make you a good child. I heard a gentleman tell a very affecting story about a little boy only five years old ; and as it relates to the subject I am speaking of, I will tell you it.

This dear little boy one evening was seen by his mother to go into the corner of the room, and turning his face to the wall, appeared to be engaged in prayer. When he came away, his mother inquired what he had been doing. “Oh, my dear mama !” he replied, “ do not ask me.” “Indeed, my love," said his mother, “ I must know." ? Then if I must tell you,” said the child, “ I was prav. ing to Jesus Christ, to make me one of his little lambs." Do you, my dear children, go and follow this dear boy's example, and then when Satan tells you to disobey your parents, you will not do what he bids you; for you must remember he only tells you to do so, because he wants to make you anhappy

while you live in this world ; and then, when vou die, he hopes you will go and be with him and his wicked angels, for a long, long eternity, where he will make you a great deal more wretched than he was able to do here. My dear little child, will you not pray

to God to save you from Satan and his wick. "ed angels, and to make you good and happy? then you will be cheerful and thankful all the day; and go to bed at night quiet and peaceful; and your dear parents will feel cause for gratitude and praise towards God, for hearing their earnest prayers for their child : and I am sure, when you become such a good and pious child as I have been speaking about, you will with pleasure learn the following lines :

Obedience and love to Parents.

My father and mother I'll tenderly love,

And cheerful obedience I'll pay; When Satan in malice would tempt me to sin,

To Jesus, my Saviour, I'll pray.

() give thy good Spirit to me, a poor child !

And then with delight l'll obey ; . Receive their reproofs with a spirit that's

mild,
And listen to all that they say.

I'll think of their kindness, affection, and

love, When a poor little infant I lay ; How they nurs'd me, and lov'd me, and dry'd

up my tears,
And kiss'd all my sorrows away.

And as I grow older, and able to learn,

They'll teach me the good and right way; And lead me with pleasure to wait on the

Lord,
And sanctify his holy day.

hairs,

My dear mother's kindness I constantly

prove, For meekness and love is her rule; She hears me my lessons, and teaches me

my hymns, And dresses me neatly for school. O how could I bear to bring down their grey

With grief to their long, their last sleep ; How painful the thought, it makes my heart

ache, And my eyes they feel ready to weep. Oh no! I will honour, and love, and obey,

And all their commands I will keep; Then they'll close their dear eyelids in com

fort and peace, When they go to their long, their last sleep.

Then when I grow old, and feeble, and grey,

And like my dear parents I die;
Good angels with pleasure will carry me

home,
To live with them up in the sky.

SABBATH BREAKING. In how many cases has the hand of God been stretched forth to punish those who break the Sabbath!

The church-yard at M-- contains the body of a youth, once the joy of his father. He had resolved to take his pleasure on the water on a Sabbath-day, with a party of young people. His grandmother, a pious woman, often warned him. “Be sure (said she) your sin will find you out. You will one of these days break the Sabbath once tou often.” “Hold your tongue," replied the rash youth.

But behold, in the evening of that very Sabbath he was brought into the village a lifeless corpse !

Wilt thou, O Lord, admit a child

Amongst that pilgrim band, Who while they tread earth's dreary wild,

Look tow'rds the promised land ? Feeble my infant steps may be,

My strength deficient prove;
But thou with might can'st strengthen me.

And cheer me with thy love.
Wilt thou a straying lamb once inore

Within thy fold receive,
Ope wide the consecrated door,

And a kind welcome give ?

Yes-well I know, dear shepherd, Lord,

Such is thy pardoning love; On earth, thou'lt guide me with thy word.

And plead for me above.

EARLY PIETY.
By cool Siloam's shady fountain,

How sweet the lily grows!
How sweet the breath on yonder mountain

Of Sharon's dewy rose !

Lo! such the child, whose young devotion

The paths of peace has trod;
Whose secret soul's instinctive notion

'Tends upward to his God.
By cool Siloam's shady fountain

The lily must decay;
The rose that blooms on yonder mountain

Must shortly fade away.
A little while—the bitter morrow

Of mau's maturer age
Will shake the soul with cank'ring sorrow,

And passion's stormy rage.

Oh! thou, whose every year untainted

In changeless virtue shone ; Preserve the flowers thy grace has planted,

Aud keep them still thine own!
