she soon found, if she would be a child of God, a disciple of the meek and lowly Jesus, she must be humble; and her evil tempers must be subdued: that if she would follow and please her Saviour, she must take up her cross and deny herself. She therefore prayed, that God would give her his grace, by which she might be enabled to watch and strive against this sin, that so easily beset her. She also begged, that the blessed Spirit would implant in her those lovely fruits mentioned in Gal. v. 22. For a long time she felt her temperas strong as ever: and Satan, who goeth about seeking whom he may devour, tempted her to think the task hopeless; and that all her praying, watching, and striving, were in vain. In this sad state, four verses of a hymn she had been taught in her youth, came powerfully to her mind. They are as follows: Whene'er our angry passions rise, And tempt our thoughts and tongues to

strife, To Jesus let us lift our eyes,

Bright pattern of the Christian's life. Oh! how benevolent and kind !

How mild-how ready to forgive! Be this the temper of our mind,

And these the truths by which we live! Dispensing good where'er he came,

The labours of his life were love;

Oh! if we love the Saviour's name,

Let his divine example move !

His perfect pattern may we trace,

To teach us what we ought to be ; Jesus! assist us by thy grace,

And make us daily more like Thee ! Brought home by the Spirit of God, this had the desired effect. She felt encouraged; and determined in the strength of God, that whenever she felt her proud and sinful tempers rising, she would think of the example of Jesus; and also turn the above hymn into a prayer. She did so. Her proud spirit was brought to humble itself at the foot of the cross : her temper became by degrees more and more subdued ; and I believe it might with truth be said, that the lion was. changed into a lamb. Let not then any who have set their faces towards Zion, be discouraged, because they do not feel the power of indwelling sin give way all at once. The enemy of souls takes firm hold of the heart; but there is a stronger than he, even Jesus, who can overcome the fiercest temper, and declarcs, “Sin shall not have dominion over you." Look then to Jesus. Cleave to this heavenly pattern; and compare his life with the life you now are leading. Pray that the blessed Spirit would take of the things of Christ, and shew them to you. And may God grant, that we all, be

holding with open face the glory of God, may be changed into the same image, from glory to glory, as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Thus I have tried to state what it is, to cleave to the Lord.

Before I conclude, I would remark the way in which Barnabas exhorts the disciples to cleave to the Lord ; namely, with purpose of heart-without ceasing, closely, and fully. Whatever temptations, difficulties, or troubles the Chris tian meets with, still he must cleave to the Lord Jesus, by a constant exercise of faith ; a bold profession of his name; ready obedience to his commands.

But what shall be said to those, who desire not the knowledge of God, and will not have him to reign over them; who cleave to the world and its vanities; and are flattering themselves with the hope, that all will be well at last? Oh! that you would consider your ways, and flee, while it is called today, to the only hope set before you in Christ Jesus. This kind Saviour invites you to come to him.

Come, ye whom the God of this world hath blinded and led astray, and Christ shall give you light.

Come ye, whom Satan hath enslaved ; and the gracious Redeemer shall set you

free.

Come ye, that have been righteous in your own eyes. O! forsake this refuge of lies; and hasten to the ark, before the rains descend, and the floods come, which will sweep away every false hope. Oh! I beseech you, do not put off the concerns of your immortal souls to a more convenient season. Think not that a death-bed repentance will suffice; for how know you, but that this very night your soul may be called into eternity! . How awful would your condition then be! Lost - undone for ever! “ The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the people who forget God!(Ps. ix. 17. These are not the words of man, but the tremendous declaration of the Judge of all the earth.

Come then, ruined and undone sin. ners, to Jesus : humbly seek for pardon through his precious blood ; and believe that he is both able and willing to save you.

And let young Christians be encour. aged to cleave more and more closely to our faithful God and Saviour, who has promised; “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." Amid all your trials, my fellow Christians, remember you have a City of Refuge, whereunto you may alway resort, and where you will be safe in every storm. The Lord will keep you as the apple of his eye: he will lead

you under the shadow of his wings. In proportion as you cleave to him by faith and prayer, will he cleave to you, and watch over you to do you good; guiding you by his abundant grace and mercy in Christ Jesus here, and receiving you in. to his glory hereafter. There in those happy, happy mansions, may many, very many of the readers of the Children's Friend, along with the humble writer of this, meet; and never again be sepaa rated. This is the heartfelt desire and earnest prayer of

Verité. ACCIDENT IN MALTA. A dreadful accident took place at Vaa letta, in the island of Malta, on the evening of the 11th of February last. At the Carnival, which is held every year in that city, a number of boys were brought together for the purpose of being treated with bread and fruit.

They entered at an hour rather later than usual into the Convent of the · Fransciscans, the place from which the bread and fruit were given. Along with these boys, there rushed into the convent a number of young men and others, who ought not to have been there.

Their object is supposed to have been, to make their way to the other end of the convent, and to obtain a part of the
