towards them? Instead of allowing them this powder, I would have fried them on gridirons, as Lawrence was."

Whilst they thus spoke to Baudicon, some friars closed in with the old man, persuading him at least to take a crucifix in his hands, lest the people should murmur. And they fastened it between his hands; but when Baudicon was come down, and espied what they had done, he said, “ alas, father, what do you do now? will you be an idolater at our last hour?” And then pulling the idol out of his hands, which they had fastened therein, he threw it away, saying, “what cause hath the people to be angry at us, for not receiving a Jesus Christ of wood ? We bear upon our hearts the cross of the Son of the everlasting God; feeling his holy word written therein in letters of gold.”

Being come to the place where they were to suffer, Baudicon asked leave to confess his faith before the people. Answer was made, that he was to look upon his ghostly, father and confessor the priest, and to confess to him. He was then hauled rudely to the stake, when he began to sing the 16th psalm. A friar cried out, “ do you hear what wicked errors these heretics sing, to beguile the people ?” Baudicon replied, “ callest thou the psalms of the prophet David,

Then turning his eyes towards his father, who was about to be chained to the stake, he said, “be of good courage, father; the worst will be past by and bye.” As the executioner was fastening him to the post, he chanced to hit him with the hammer on his foot, to make him stand nearer. The old man said, “ friend, thou hurtest my foot; why dost thou abuse me thus ?" A friar hearing, said, “Ah! these heretics; they would be counted martyrs forsooth; but if they are touched a little, they cry out as if they were killed."

To which Baudicon the son replied ; “think you that we fear the tormentors? No such thing. For had we feared them, we had never exposed our bodies to this shameful and painful death."

Then he often repeated these short breathings: “O! God, Father everlasting, accept the sacrifice of our bodies, for thy well-beloved Son, Jesus Christ's sake." One of the friars cried, “heretic, thou liest: he is none of thy father : the devil is thy father.” And thus, during these conflicts, he bent his eyes to hea. ven, and speaking to his father, said ; behold, I see heaven open, and millions of angels ready to receive us, rejoicing to see us thus witnessing the truth in the view of the world. Father, let us be glad' and rejoice; for the joys of heaven are set open to us.”

Then said one of the friars, “I see hell open; and millions of devils ready to carry you thither."

The Lord, who never forsakes any that put their trust in him, stirred up the heart, and opened the mouth of a poor man who stood in the crowd: who being moved with pity, cried aloud, " be of good comfort, Baudicon, stand thou to it; thou fightest in a good quarrel; I. am on thy side.” After which words, he went away, and saved himself from danger.

Fire was forth with put to the straw . and wood, which burnt beneath: whilst

they (not shrinking from their pains) spake one to another: Baudicon often repeated this in his father's ears, si faint not, father, nor be afraid ; yet a very little while, and we shall enter into the heavenly mansions."*

The fire growing hot upon them, the last words they were heard to pronounce, were, “ Jesus Christ, thou Son of God, into thy hands we commend our spirits.

And thus these two slept sweetly in the Lord.

Within eight days after, Jane the mother and Martin the younger son were put to death. But of this more hereafter.

til the evening of the Saturday before her death, when her mind became suddenly clouded, and she did not appear to enjoy hearing the Scriptures or hymns read, or prayer, or spiritual conversation. She also became most painfully hasty, and received my attentions with great peevishness, and sometimes even with apparent disgust :-often saying, “I wish you would not come near me; I am not your dear Sarah now here you are again with your nasty sherry. wine. and biscuits, and eggs, and messes, and medicines, &c. I will not take any more.” The only way in which I could calm her, was to kneel down beside her couch and pray, or sing a hymn: and at this time I was so ill myself, with violent inflammation on my lungs, that I was not always able to do this. I had promised myself a delightful day with her on Sunday ; but it pleased God to exercise my faith and patience, in a manner and measure, which required his special support. The only gleams of a better state of feeling throughout the whole day, were when my brother came in between his morning and afternoon services : and during her pious physician's evening visit, when she spoke much and very sweetly, though amidst much confusion of mind, upon my brother's afternoon text, "Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” She also listened with lively interest to her doctor's account of a sermon he had heard in the afternoon, upon the last verse of the 17th Psalm : and brought forward several of the Old Testa. ment histories, particularly that of Abra. ham's offering his son. She continued in a very pleasing frame, for an hour or two after her kind medical friend left her; during which, she conversed sweetly with my mother : but on preparing her for bed, she relapsed into the same distressing state as before. She was too weak to kneel; and had for some days prayed either lying on the sofa, or in bed. And perceiving that she had not prayed, I said to her, shortly after she was in bed, “ Sarah, dear, you have not prayed.” She replied very angrily. I firmly said, “I insist upon your praying, my love.” She instantly began in a tone which so shocked me, that I greatly regretted having insisted upon it; but on uttering the petition, “ The kingdom come,” (she always began with the Lord's Prayer,) the change was most remark. able; and the spirit of deep and calm devotion, with which she went through the rest of her prayers, proved a salutary refreshment to my almost exhausted spirit. I was quite satisfied, that this short advantage permitted to Satan, was for the more perfect and full display of the divine glory. For it proved, that it was not under merely human influence and teaching, that this dear afflicted child bad been enabled to speak and act as
