1 TARRY with

me,

Saviour!

O my For the day is passing by; See! the shades of evening gather, And the night is drawing nigh. 2 Deeper, deeper grow the shadows,

Paler now the glowing west,
Swift the night of death advances;
Shall it be the night of rest?
3 Feeble, trembling, fainting, dying,
Lord, I cast myself on thee;
Tarry with me through the darkness;
While I sleep, still watch by me.
4 Tarry with me, O my Saviour!

Lay my head upon thy breast
Till the morning; then awake me,
Morning of eternal rest!

1 SAVIOUR, breathe an evening blessing, Ere repose our spirits seal: Sin and want we come confessing;

Thou canst save and thou canst heal. 2 Though destruction walk around us, Though the arrow near us fly, Angel guards from thee surround us; We are safe, if thou art nigh.

3 Though the night be dark and dreary, Darkness cannot hide from thee: Thou art he, who, never weary, Watcheth where thy people be.

4 Should swift death this night o'ertake us,
And our couch become our tomb,
May the morn in heaven awake us,
Clad in light and deathless bloom!

EDMESTON.

1 SILENTLY the shades of evening
Gather round my lowly door;
Silently they bring before me
Faces I shall see no more.

2 Oh! the lost, the unforgotten,

Though the world be oft forgot;
Oh! the shrouded and the lonely,
In our hearts they perish not.
3 Living in the silent hours,

Where our spirits only blend,
They, unlinked with earthly trouble,
We, still hoping for its end.

4 How such holy memories cluster,

Like the stars when storms are past; Pointing up to that far heaven We may hope to gain at last.

4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless:
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness:
Where is death's sting; where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me!

5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee!
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me!

LYTE.

1 LORD, dismiss us with thy blessing,
Fill our hearts with joy and peace;
Let us each, thy love possessing,
Triumph in redeeming grace:
Oh, refresh us,
Travelling through this wilderness.

2 Thanks we give, and adoration,
For thy gospel's joyful sound;
May the fruits of thy salvation
In our hearts and lives abound;
May thy presence
With us evermore be found.

3 Then, whene'er the signal's given,
Us from earth to call away,
Borne on angel's wings to heaven,
Glad the summons to obey,

[blocks in formation]

Tasting of enjoyment greater
Than they could conceive before;
Full enjoyment,-

80.

Full, and pure, for evermore.

Parting Hymn.

KELLY.

1 GOD of our salvation, hear us;
Bless, oh, bless us, ere we go;
When we join the world, be near us,
Lest we cold and careless grow.
Saviour, keep us;

Keep us safe from every foe.

2 May we live in view of heaven,
Where we hope to see thy face;
Save us from unhallowed leaven,
All that might obscure thy grace;
Keep us walking
Each in his appointed place.

3 As our steps are drawing nearer
To the place we call our home,
May our view of heaven grow clearer,
Hope more bright of joys to come;
And, when dying,

81.

1

May thy presence cheer the gloom.

Benediction.
