(1) This Paffage is not to be understood litterally, but figuratively. For our Lord could not intend that his Difciples fhould fell their Gar ments and buy Swords, and thereby oppofe Force to Force ; for had this been his Defign, he would not have faid, Ver. 38. that two Swords are enough, nor would he have blamed St. Peter for ufing his Sword as he did, Mat. 26. 52. He wanted not Weapons, had he been difpofed to put his Enemies to flight. Good Expofitors therefore think that by these figurative Expreffions, our Lord admonifhed his Difciples to arm them felves with Faith and Patience against the perilous Times which were juft at hand.
