HEN Jefus, fix days before the paffover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he railed from the dead. 2. There they made him a fupper, and Martha ferved: but Lazarus was one of them that fat at the table with him. 3. Then took Mary a pound of ointment, of fpikenard, very coftly, and anointed the feet of Jefus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the houfe was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4. Then faith one of his difciples, Judas Ifcariot, Simons fon, which fhould betray him, 5. Why was not this ointment fold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6. This he faid, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7. Then faid Jefus, Let her alone: against the day of my burial hath fhe kept this. 8. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. 9. Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came, not for Jefus fake only, but that they might fee Lazarus alfo, f whom he had raised from the dead. 10. But the chief priests confulted, that they might put Lazarus alfo to death; 11. Because that by reafon of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jefus. 12. (1) The Word here rendred that, does not denote the Caufe, but the Event. The Meaning then of this Place is, it fo fell out, or, fo it came to pafs, that the Saying of the Prophet was fulfilled God wills not Evil, nor does he by his Prophets foretel it, that it may come to pals. But fince the evil Difpofitions of Men will bring it to pafs, he foretels it by his Prophets, and knows how to bring good out of it The Pro phecy therefore is not the Caufe of the Event; but the agreeableness of the Event with it, fhews the Exactnefs and Truth of the Prophecy. This Word that denotes not the final Caufe, but the Event, in Pfal. 50. 4. 1 Cor. 11. 19. and in many other Places.

(2) Thefe Words may be rendred, their Eyes were blinded, and their Hearts were hardned; for fo the fame Form of Speaking is tranflated in other Places. Thus, what is tranflated Luk. 12. 20. This Night fall thy
