ken. So that the Meaning of our Lord is not, that through the Power of Faith, the Apostles fhould be, ftrictly speaking, able to remove Moun rains; but that they fhould be enabled to do extraordinary Things in the Difcharge of their Office, and to furmount the greatest Obstructions to the Progrefs of the Gospel. This Senfe is the more probable, becaufe the Jews were wont to fay, of a Doctor able to refolve the most difficult Questions, that he was a rooter up of Mountains; and because this Figure is of ten ufed in the holy Scriptures. Hence it is faid of Saul and Jonathan, 2 Sam. 1. 23. They were swifter than Eagles, and stronger than Lions; meaning only, that they were very swift, and very strong. And when the Prophet Zechary, Chap. 14.4. fpeaks of the Cleaving of the Mount of Olives, and that half of it fhall remove toward the North, and half of it toward the South, it is not to be understood of the actual Cleaving of the Mountain, but that there fhould be great Commotions among the People, which fhould open a Way for the Enemy. Again, when St. John fays, Chap. 21. 25. that there were many other Things which Jefus did, the which if they fhould be written, the World would not contain the Books, he means no more, than that our Lord did very many more miraculous Works than are recorded of him. And peradventure, the best Solution of thofe difficult Places wherein Mofes, Exod. 32. 32. defires God to blor him out of the Book he had written, and St. Paul, Rom. 9. 3. that he might be accurfed from Chrift, is, to fuppofe them to be Hyperbolical Expreffions, by which, though much is intended, yet not fo much as is fpoken, their Meaning being, that they could be content to undergo great and fevere Afflictions, even Death it felf, if thereby they could benefit and profit the Jews their Brethren and Kinfmen according to the Flefh.
