HIS INFLUENCE INVOKED.

Prayer for Light and Guidance.

L. M.

1 COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With peace and healing from above;
Be Thou my Light, be Thou my Guide,
O'er every thought and step preside.
2 The light of truth to me display,
That I may know and choose my way;
Plant holy fear within my heart,
That I from God may ne'er depart.
3 Conduct me safe, conduct me far,
From every sin and hurtful snare;
Lead me to God, my final Rest,
In His enjoyment to be blest.
4 Lead me to holiness, the road

That I must take to dwell with God;
Lead me to Christ, the living Way,
Nor let me from His pastures stray.

O kindle now the sacred flame;
Teach it to burn with pure desire.
A brighter faith and hope impart,
And let me now the Saviour see:
O soothe and cheer my burdened heart,
And bid my spirit rest in Thee.
John Stewart (

L. M.

The Operations of the Spirit. 1 ETERNAL Spirit, we confess And sing the wonders of Thy grace; Thy power conveys our blessings down From God the Father and the Son. 2 Enlightened by Thy heavenly ray, Our shades and darkness turn to day; Thine inward teachings make us know Our danger and our refuge, too.

Thou that hear - est pray'r, let Thy ser-vants share

Attend our hum- ble

And . high: (Omit.) We

plead the prom- ise of Thy word; Grant us Thy Holy Spirit, Lord.

The Spirit asked for.

2 If earthly parents hear

Their children when they cry,

If they, with love sincere,

Their children's wants supply;
Much more wilt Thou Thy love display,
And answer when Thy children pray.

3 Our heavenly Father, Thou!

We, children of Thy grace:
O let Thy spirit now

Descend, and fill the place:

So shall we feel the heavenly flame, And all unite to praise Thy name. 4 O send Thy Spirit down

On all the nations, Lord,
With great success to crown

The preaching of Thy word,
Till heathen lands shall own Thy sway,
And cast their idol-gods away.

John Burton Jr., (1803

), 1824. Ab.

2 Here sinners, of a humble frame,
May taste His grace, and learn His Name;
May read, in characters of blood,
The wisdom, power, and grace of God.

3 Here faith reveals to mortal eyes

A brighter world beyond the skies; Here shines the light which guides our

way

From earth to realms of endless day

4 O grant us grace, Almighty Lord,
To read and mark Thy holy Word;
Its truth with meekness to receive,
And by its holy precepts live.

Thanks for the Gospel. 1 LET everlasting glories crown

Thy head, my Saviour, and my Lord:
Thy hands have brought salvation down,
And writ the blessings in Thy Word.
In vain the trembling conscience seeks
Some solid ground to rest upon;
With long despair the spirit breaks,
Till we apply to Christ alone.

How well Thy blesséd truths agree, How wise and holy Thy commands; Thy promises, how firm they be, How firm our hope and comfort stands! 4 Should all the forms that men devise Assault my faith with treacherous art,

I'd call them vanity and lies,
And bind the Gospel to my heart.
Rev. Isaac Watts (1674-1748), 1709. Ab.

CHO.-I am trust-ing, Lord, in Thee, Dear Lamb of Cal- va - ry; Humbly at Thy

all but dross; I shall Thy sal-va-tion find,

cross I bow: Save me, Je-sus, save me now. 178 At the Cross.

2 Here I give my all to Thee,

Friends, and time, and earthly store;

Soul and body Thine to be, Wholly Thine for evermore.-CHO.

3 In the promises I trust:

Now I feel the blood applied;

I am prostrate in the dust;

I with Christ am crucified.-Сно.

2 For every thirsty, longing heart, Here streams of bounty flow, And life, and health, and bliss impart,

To banish mortal woe.

3 Ye sinners, come, 'tis mercy's voice,
The gracious call obey;
Mercy invites to heavenly joys,
And can you yet delay?

4 Dear Saviour, draw reluctant hearts, To Thee let sinners fly,

And take the bliss Thy love imparts,
And drink and never die.

Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,
Can raise a soul to heaven.

Miss Anne Steele (1717—1778), 1760. Ab. 2 The sovereign will of God alone

"Without Money and without Price."
Is. lv. I, 2.

1 LET every mortal ear attend,
And every heart rejoice;
The trumpet of the gospel sounds,
With an inviting voice.

2 Ho, ye that pant for living streams, And pine away and die,

Creates us heirs of grace;

Born in the image of His Son,

A new, peculiar race.

3 The Spirit, like some heavenly wind, Breathes on the sons of flesh,

New-models all the carnal mind,
And forms the man afresh.

Here you may quench your raging thirst 4 Our quickened souls awake and rise

With springs that never dry.

3 Rivers of love and mercy here

In a rich ocean join;

HUMMEL. C. M.

From the long sleep of death; On heavenly things we fix our eyes, And praise employs our breath.
