OPENING SERVICE-Second Quarter, History Apostolic Church.

NOTE. At the sound of the bell the school comes to order, and joins heartily in the following service. All business may be attended to either before the hour or after the lesson. From the beginning of worship to the close of the lesson, let nothing interrupt.

1. SERVICE OF SONG.

2. PRAYER, closing with the Lord's Prayer, in unison.

3. GLORIA PATRI. (School standing.)

4. RESPONSIVE READING, selected passages. (School standing.)

Superintendent. And it shall come to pass in the latter days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills:

[blocks in formation]

Supt. And many peoples shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob;

Sch. And he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: Supt. For out of Zion shall go forth the law,

Sch. And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Supt. And he shall judge between the nations, and shall reprove many peoples: Sch. And they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruninghooks:

Supt. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,

Sch. Neither shall they learn war any more.

Supt. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace,

Sch. That bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation;

Supt. That saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Sch. The voice of thy watchmen! they lift up the voice, together do they sing.

5. LESSON HYMN: Tune

-Wesley.

Hail to the brightness of Zion's glad morning!
Joy to the lands that in darkness have lain !
Hushed be the accents of sorrow and mourning;
Zion in triumph begins her mild reign.

Hail to the brightness of Zion's glad morning,
Long by the prophets of Israel foretold;
Hail to the millions from bondage returning,
Gentiles and Jews the blest vision behold.

6. ANNOUNCEMENTS.

7. THE SCRIPTURE READING FOR THE DAY. See Lessons. It is recommended that the Biblical Catechism be occasionally read responsively in place of the Scripture Selection for the day.

8. REPETITION OF THE GOLDEN TEXT, in unison.

9. STUDY OF THE LESSONS.

And they went out." Acts 12:7, 10.

21. How was the foreign missionary work of the Church begun?

"The Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away." Acts 13:2, 3.

25. What did Peter say of this claim in the council at Jerusalem?

66

Why tempt ye God, that ye should put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that we shall be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in like manner as they." Acts 15: 10, II.

26. How was Paul's second missionary journey begun?

31. How did Paul comfort the Thessalonians in their sorrow?

32. How did Paul assure the Galatians of their freedom from the Jewish law? "In Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith working through love. . . 35. How did Paul rebuke the Corinthians for their divisions about ministers? “I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase." I Cor. 3:6, 7.

66

But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." I Cor. 13:13.

INTRODUCTORY NOTES.

- THE PART TITLES. These are intended to define the leading periods in the growth of the Apostolic Church, and to indicate their distinguishing characteristics.

Note 2. -THE LESSON TITLES AND SUB-TITLES. These have been prepared with great care. They are designed to show the successive steps in the progress of the history. This has been possible only approximately in Part V and in some portions of Part IV, where the exact date of the material is obscure and disputed.

Note 4. -THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE APOSTOLIC PERIOD. The Apostolic period begins with the year of our Lord's crucifixion, which in all probability occurred in A.D. 30, and closes with the death of the apostle John, abouț A.D. 100, but in the Acts and the epistles, notations of time are either absent altogether, or are only incidental and indefinite. Nearly all the dates accompanying these lessons must therefore be regarded as only approximate the best that can be given in the present condition of Biblical knowledge.
