party, about twelve in number, met on the bank to proceed to Richmond. Among the party was this young man. Just as he was stepping into the boat, the happy remembrance of the word of God spake powerfully, "remember the sabbath-day to keep it holy." Conscience instantly replied, "How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?" He could proceed no further: he retired from the banks of the Thames, amidst the jeers and ridicule of the scornful. But what were his feelings, when the sad tidings came, that, as the party returned from their sinful pleasure, the boat ran foul of a barge near Putney: the party, half drunk, saw, but could not avoid the danger. The screams of the females were heard on the shore, but alas! to no effect. Seven of the party sank to rise no more.

This young man soon after died of consumption. Repentance and a lively hope of eternal life shone brightly in his last moments. He often spoke of this remarkable preservation ; and remarked that the word of God had saved his soul from death, and his life from destruction.

How swiftly roll the circling years, Though few on us have shed their ray; But e'en to us the time appears,

In silence, to fly swift away.

This is indeed a solemn thought,

And well it now becomes to think; For we unknowing, may be brought, Young as we are, to life's last brink.

How many little infants die;

And some of us who worship here,
Before this present year goes by,,
May 'chance be laid upon our bier.

Jesus hath conquer'd death and hell,
Oh let us to this refuge fly;
And then, it cannot but be well,
Though ere to-morrow's sun we die.

Now let us seek him; he has said
He waits a pardon to bestow:
No sinner yet, to him who fled,
Died unforgiven, or sunk to woe.

Foster, Printer, Kirkby Lonsdale.

REGENTS TOWN IN AFRICA.

What an honour and a privilege it is, to belong to a Bible, or a Missionary Society! They are doing wonders in the world; and the time will soon come, when it will be found that they have been the grand means of hastening forwards the reign of Christ among all

nations.

These pictures before you, dear rea der, give you true scencs of what these

societies are doing in Africa. See that man reading to his two attentive hearers! It is the Scriptures, which he reads. Yes, the blessed Scriptures have found their way to Africa, through the kind labours of the Bible Society in England: and the Missionaries tell us, that when a poor negro has got his own heart affected and warmed with the precious truths of the Bible, he longs that his poor countrymen should partake of his joy. And it is no uncommon thing for him, to go into the woods, and to read to them out of the Bible. And here you have a picture of the baptism of two little negro boys. Hundreds of

children in Africa have been baptized by the Missionaries; and many of them have given solid proofs that they were indeed born again of God's Holy Spirit. Thus, by the joint labours of Bible and Missionary Societies, Christian Churches are forming amongst the heathen; and the time, we trust, is not very far distant, when God will give his Son the uttermost parts of the earth for his possession. Then happy they, who take even the humblest part in this blessed work! And who has not a prayer and a penny to give for a Bible, or a Missionary Society?
